What's difficult is partial reinforcement. If you want to cut out night feeds, then they way to do it is just that - cut out all feeds during the night. What will massively confuse a baby and result in failure is cutting out some night feeds. How will Freddie know that when he wakes up at 3am he gets booby, but he won't get any booby if he wakes up at 5am? He doesn't know the difference and what I can't do with any certainty is predict or know which times he is genuinely hungry and which are just comfort feeds.
I don't believe he can go from feeds every two hours to nothing for 12 hours straight without being genuinely hungry at least once during that period, particularly as breastmilk is so quickly digested. Once he's actually eating solids, which hang around in the gut longer, I'll be more confident about stopping the night feeds. That's why I'm desperate to know how long it is until they actually swallow the stuff"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

No I get what you're saying. The positive in this is that he does feed as frequently during the day so he is obviously getting a lot of milk. Maybe this could be why he's not as interested in food when you put it down? I had to cut A's morning bottle as I found he just wasn't interested in his breakfast if I didn't. (He wakes up late so generally had his milk and breakfast in quick succession, obviously if he woke up at 6am he'd probably still get his milk)
I think BLW is different for all babies, you get some that will be hoovering up there food at 6 months and others who don't get the hang of it until 10 months or so, well that's the impression I've got from various Facebook groups and conversations. So it's really just keep trying until more goes in, and you will know when he manages some as the nappies tell the storyThe frontier is never somewhere else. Thing is, I don't think Freddie realises that solid food will sate his hunger. If I tried to feed him some non-milk breakfast and he was starving, he'd just squrim and cry thinking 'why are we playing this game with the bib and the table and the funny-tasting stuff when all I want is some booby, mummy?'."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0

No they don't I think they say around 10-12 months for them to equate solid food with hunger. I wouldn't stop it at breakfast but what I mean is if he's feeding every 2 hours, it'l be hard to find a point where he's hungry but not ravenous and wanting fed again if that makes sense? I know even when we started weaning if A was getting milk every 2 hours I probably would never have got any solids into him as he wouldn't have been interested, similarly if he's too hungry he would just sit and wail in the high chair
I realise I'm not being particularly helpful, but it's such a juggling act trying to fit it all in particularly in the beginning. Maybe Turtle or Katie will have better advice as they are both breastfeeding and BLW-ing. Maybe they could give you an idea of there schedulex

Quick question... why are my boobs tingling? We're not feeding all day today... actually I think we've had 5 from 8.30am (we did nearly 24 hours of boob yesterday).0

Did someone on here post that they had two Medela Calma teats that they couldn't / didn't use? Or am I imagining/dreaming things...?0

I'm not sure Savage, but the whole bottle with teat is cheaper than just the teat at the moment at Mothercare xThe frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0

Just a quick query babies tummy has been hard after feeds and softening on and off. She looks like she's been straining a bit today but no poos since 5am which is unusual. She is crying a lot again tonight which she has done for the last three nights & those !cries have been for milk. I'm worried to feed her too much tonight (though I have everytime she had a hunger cry) in case I'm over feeding her or the cry is in pain with her tummy. She has calmed down after each feed. Hubby said if she was blocked or constipated and I was 'over feeding her' then she would surely throw the feed back up of it can't go down the usual route, it sounds sensible to me I just don't want to keep feeding if it's actually making her tummy worse

I do. Bottles and teats, opened them to sterilize but never used, the midwife said I should use normal ones when I was trying to make her put on weight. I had packed them "for next child" but I can buy new ones when that happens. You can pick them up at any time. I live around mediacity. Also have milk storage bags.Quit smoking *1st January 2010*
