    Daydream - she is gorgeous!!!

My midwife said breast feeding inhibits ovulation so I would t have a period as long as I breast fed. In another conversation she said after the baby you are super fertile so be careful. I therefore have no idea if or when I'll next have a period ! It was a question on my list for the GP at 6 week check rather than be confused by the hit and miss midwife!!

Breastfeeding can inhibit ovulation (and often does). You can be super fertile after a baby. Every woman is different. There's just no way of predicting when your periods will return unfortunately. I BF exclusively and mine haven't yet (six and a half months).

A word of caution for those breastfeeding mums who don't want another baby immediately - even if you're not having periods you still might be ovulating, or about to ovulate, so don't use your lack of periods as a sign you don't need contraception.

We had a big lecture on it at the hospital antenatal classes. She is kind of right on both counts, BF does inhibit OV, but under very strict circumstances, which is why it isn't suitable as a means of conception. Basically you cant EVER EVER go longer than 6 hours without a feed, or your body kicks in with full on hormones, and the protection is gone for all time, you cant get it back, leaving you super fertile.... Which makes having a decent sleep, a break, bottle feeding etc a big no no.

I guess that makes sense. I've not gone more than 3 hours without hoiking out the norks since monster-munch was born.
so if you start to bottle feed or have a 10 hour sleep (ha! imagine!) there is a chance you could ovulate and the protection has gone for good?

Best not to see it as protection - it's not. If you don't want a baby, got to use contraception, even if breastfeeding.

What contraception is safe to use while bf'ing? Would Cerazette (or similar) be an option again?

Typically only progesterone-only contraceptives are used whilst breastfeeding, e.g. mini-pill, norplant. I believe Cerazette is a type of mini-pill, i.e. doesn't contain oestrogen, so it would be an option, I guess. I'm not a doctor though!

    Morning ladies :o

We have a new tooth! Number 4 that has been making his life (and therefore mine) a misery for the last week or two is finally poking through! :T Had a rubbish night with it, after I hid under the covers for a bit he did finally go off but was up again at 12, 3 and then 6, with a temperature at the 3 o clock one. Hopefully now its through he'll get a bit of a rest before the next one.

Hope everyone has a good day, its absolutely freezing here so thats scuppered my plans of a walk to the park. Need milk so going to have to go to the shops at some point though...

My doc offered me some form of pill at the 6 week check, think it was the mini pill? Despite me saying I did not want any hormonal contraception.

P.s.... a baby that young and you're even considering needing contraception? :D

I was pregnant again at 3 months! 6 years to get number 1... one night for number 2! (We'd decided to leave it up to luck what happened).

This time - no ifs or buts - hubby's getting snipped! I've had enough of my bits being furtled about with.

A mum at the toy library near me was saying last week after their second her hubs had the snip - they've now got 4 and he's had it done 3 times, but it keeps healing itself!!!!

  • No worries from me about using BF as a contraceptive, I'm definitely not that daft, was just curious about what the midwife said (and assumed it was her usual baloney!) :) Definitely learning lots from this thread though :D:T

We had a brilliant night's sleep (all relative of course!), love the feeling of hearing the baby cry, looking and the clock and thinking "oh my goodness I've had 4 hours sleep in one go!" Much worse when you look and think "ah carp, she's only been asleep 20 minutes!". Feel like a normal human today and opened all the curtains by 9am, both of us up and dressed and fed by then too. It's like a Christmas miracle even though its not Christmas :rotfl::rotfl:

Hope everyone has a lovely day. Hope to get out with the pram later even though it is cold - at least it is dry here (for now!).

Did you use your Merino sleeping bag from birth?
Underneath, would your baby wear a vest/bodysuit and a sleepsuit or just a sleepsuit?

Many thanks for your time replying ... I am so excited as I've just been given a Merino newborn-3 months sleep bag. The one you mentioned last week.

    Thank-you!

Lol, 3 months fair enough, but when mine was less than a month old all I was thinking of was sleep :D Bamama, you've got a baby that sleeps though haven't you? :D

On the breastfeeding/period thing I've just asked my friend about when her periods returned. She exclusively breastfed her baby, a hungry boy who wanted feeding every couple of hours day and night, for seven months and her periods returned five weeks after the birth. I asked her whether she ever went six hours between feeds and she barked with laughter.

So it goes to show that everyone's different.
