I do get the baby centre emails :) should read them!

He has a play mat... would he need to be belly down to appreciate it?

Oh gawd the redesigned Tesco nappies are ugly (hate nappies with pictures and bright colours all over)! They've also replaced the nice smiley giraffe with some demonic looking duck in the size we're using!

Somehow I suspect a customer service email wouldn't be taken seriously demanding the reinstatement of the smiley giraffe would it.

Re. distinguishing between day and night - we started a bedtime routine very early on. I think she was only a week or two old, so obviously didn't really understand much, but having one thing every 24 hours that was predictable and structured helped me stay sane!

She was born in May, so the evenings were quite bright, but if it were now, I'd start dimming lights in the living room etc. early evening. If you don't already have a dimmable light in the room where she sleeps, consider getting one - that way, you can dim it as you wish to create 'night' and 'day' (and you don't need to whack the light on full brightness to feed/change nappy in the middle of the night). We gave her a bath, then fed her and put her in her basket in the dark bedroom. Of course she'd wake up numerous times and/or not settle straight away, but we never took her out of the dark room as long as it was night. She got fed in the dark (lights on, but dimmed to very low), nappy changed in the dark (ditto), cuddled in the dark. No talking, just whispering and quiet singing. Then we'd create 'day' in the morning - lights on, blinds open, talking and singing etc. We still do all these things (she's now 8 months), we've tweaked a bit to suit the fact she's older (e.g. sleepsuit vs. 'proper' clothes - in the first few weeks she was in vest and sleepsuit 24/7), but the principle's the same and definitely worth a try.

I think it depends on his preferences - my LO didn't like being on her tummy at all when she was that age, she'd cry until we turned her over to her back. She loved lying on her back on the mat and look at the toys dangling from it. I'd try both and see what he prefers.

 I think you should start a petition, there are others on here (myself included) who'd definitely support the reinstatement of the giraffe. Replacing it with a duck is simply unacceptable.

The mat has no danglies so I doubt he'd enjoy it as much XD

Will have to try later as he's now fast asleep in my arms ><

Remember their vision's really quite poor to start with - and it's contrasts they'll see first, not the usual baby pretty pastel colours (good job since I HATE pretty pastel colours). First "toys" Erin played with (and she was much later getting an interest in anything because of her being early) were a muslin, our faces (she's still fascinated by these although now it's more hair-grabbing and glasses-yanking unfortunately) and her own hands. Took a good 4 months or so before she really became interested in toys - and then it was mainly those Lamaze ones she liked (currently the source of all awesomeness is the elephant with the musical buttons on his trunk that someone bought her for Christmas). We had a dangly play mat borrowed but for months she really wasn't interested in it at all.

She'll still quite happily sit and just feel your face and hold your mouth while you're talking studying it for hours though.

hey ladies, could someone help me please re. breastfeeding

ive been breastfeeding Maisie but i dont know if im doing something wrong, she feeds for at least 45mins to an hour at a time, when the feed finishes shes normally asleep so thats when i take her off, then i put her on her playmat and shes wide awake again and happy. It puts me off going out with her because i know if she gets hungry ill have to feed her for at least 45mins before going anywhere :( she feeds every 2 hours but thats from the start of one feed to the start of her next so really an hour between feeds, i just feel like i cant get anything done :( when she has an expressed bottle of milk she guzzles it so quickly! but when shes breastfeeding she takes ages over it and its always really sleepy sucking.

she doesn't nap during the day, she wakes up by herself at 5 for a feed for 20mins normally then sleeps until 8 when she wakes up, she goes to bed around 10pm with us. Any advice at all i would really appreciate it :)

Well he lay on it for 5 min, started sucking his hand and proceeded to cry so he's feeding again. Lol!

Ooooh found the wooden toy shop website that's near us... they do name jigsaws - now I thought I'd got her birthday presents sorted, but that would just be an adorable extra prezzie (and educational too!)... must work on daddy tonight.
