Gilly, I'm not sure if the dose he is on would make him sleepy. They said in the hospital that he had a lot in his system and that was making him sleepy. I assume if they thought I'd have problems with him being awake then they would have told me "don't leave him more than x hours just incase his meds knock him out"?

Aimless I would dreamfeed but that puts me and OH in a position of strict routine and lack of sleep that I don't think is necessary. (Don't mean to sound rude, I'm sure it works for some but it's not for me.)

It's so hard for me to say, I had one that never slept at that age :( If it was me I'd leave him, but I don't want to say yes definitely do that, and then you end up back in hospital if he's not feeding enough.

When do you see the Health Visitor or Midwife again?
The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.
  • The nappies sound encouraging bamama. I set alarms the first few days then stopped as missis soon woke us up. I'd probably ring the midwife tomorrow and see what she says.

So much for our expressed night time bottle! She had 4oz in about give minutes and squealed for more so she has been back on for 20 mins. Can you over feed a baby? Her belly is really chubby!!

When does your lo get weighed again bamama? I guess if he's putting weigh on and having wet nappies, then it's not a problem, but I'd still ask the HV. My LO wakes up every 3+ at night, but she's on formula. When I tried to BF she was awake mucho more often, but then I had not enough milk! Your DH will have to get used to background noises from baby if you end up having to wake him up for a feed, you're immensely lucky that you can have that much sleep! He should expect lack of sleep, then any good night is a bonus! Imo, at least.

Right, this one made a little noise by 4:15, by the time I went back with her feed, she was deep sleep again, and now I'm sat here with the bottle in a travel mug with hot water so it keeps warm... She's been sleeping for 3h, so I guess I can have a snooze and see if she wakes up before I need to throw this milk! You're so lucky those who could breastfeed. I wish I had known sooner that my milk wasn't enough, I'd have tried to express more and increase supply, or stop my medication beforehand (the anti inflamatories (sp?) I'm taking are the culprit apparently). I feel a bit let down that nobody told me in advance despite everybody knowing I was taking those tablets. :-/

Kira, what app is that? I'd like to download it.

We're trying infacol but she does not like it a bit. Do you have to give it every time before a feed? I know that's the advice, but I think if I give it at night she might wake up more with the taste, than if I go straight into the milk, when she might feed half awake.

Well, I guess I shot myself in the foot talking about Theo's amazing sleeping yesterday. He's been up since 4am - wide awake and ready to play!

Bamama - I don't know if it's different for BF but in my experience once you are past the first two weeks, as long as you are getting plenty of wet and dirty nappies and LO is gaining weight you are fine to let them sleep as long as they want without waking for a feed. I had one that didn't cry for feeds either and it is so worrying as it's not what you expect to happen! Trying to wake Theo to get him to feed was a nightmare - he'd sleep right through a nappy change. I remember saying to one HV I was worried he slept too much and she looked at me like I'd gone mad. Another just didn't believe me when I said he'd gone 10 hours one night (why would I lie?). I think it's so hard at first because yes, every baby is different and it's all about what's normal for your baby, but it takes time to work out what their normal is. Okay, I'm waffling now, I'll shut up.

Also, I know you are wanting to carry on BFing so I probably shouldn't say this, but that was one of the reasons we switched to formula. With BF I had no idea how much he was getting and worried about itconstantly but at least with FF I know he's getting his full amount during the day (although that varied at the start too).

Morning ladies, early one for you elelyn! Super night for us, up at 1 then slept til now :j.

Bamama could you ring the maternity ward and ask about the chances of the meds making him too sleepy to wake for feeds? In the early days with G he was sleeping 5-6 hours a night which the mw said would be the longest she would recommend leaving him for, even though he was gaining weight like a body builder. Can't remember how old your bubs is now? That was when G was a week or two old.

Re what Katiechoc says I agree about checking with professional re affect of meds on feeding too x
  • Hi bamama

Not sure if same in wales but in my hosp when i left, you could call maternity ward any hour of the day for advice up until baby is 8wks old, or maybe 12 actually. Can you call them? Maybe they can put your mind at ease. xxx
