The OP is looking at this as the buyer not as a seller who sellers 300+ at a time.

Is the 'marked as dispatched' icon there as a tool for the sellers dispatching routine or as a indicator for the buyer? If only the seller can see it then I'd say it was correct to be used as a seller tool, otherwise its there to say to the buyer that it has been dispatched. As a personal use only ebayer, that's how I see it, in the real world.

It used to be that the buyer didn't used to see that and it was a tool for the seller. I don't know when it changed.

I think we can agree though that if 2 people have different interpretations of what that button is for then eBay have not been very clear on it's intent.

  • "Dispatched is past tense meaning has been dispatched. Dispatching would mean going through the dispatch process. "

As explain above that's how it works in the real word. It's not just the tedium, take Amazon, they have items that are and aren't in stock so can't just mark all of Tuesday's orders as dispatched on Tuesday night and it's impossible with their excessive volume to keep of note of what went in the post and then mark as dispatched once it's been collected, It's also completely pointless and will increase the cost you pay because you are arguing over a triviality.

I pull orders in batches of around 50-80, it's the most efficient way that works for me, also some of my items have a 3 day dispatch time so may not go same/next day and again I'm not going to remember what has and hasn't gone in the post. I mark as dispatch either after that batch has been packed or sometimes before it's been packed for various reasons, none of which matters because your item will be in today's post and who cares if it's marked as dispatched at 12 noon or 5:30pm, it won't be with you any quicker.

This weekend my customers had a choice, I could pack their orders on Sunday and mark them as dispatched as they are packed, or I could pack them on Tuesday and mark them as dispatched as they are packed (as I didn't have enough time to do it all on Monday), so if you was my buyer, which would you prefer?

It does not matter, if a item is marked as dispatched it means it is going in today's post. If you have any other interpretation it is wrong, for the simply fact that the majority of large retailers are sending dispatch emails after your item is packed, rather than after it has been collected by the courier.

To all the naysayers over the "marked as dispatched" argument I have a very simple question. Why are you able to change the dispatched icon back to "mark as not dispatched"?

Maybe this is just in case you accidently mark the item as dispatched when it hasn't been :o

And either way in this case if you are going by the minorities interpretaion, then the item wasn't even packed & labeled ready to send, because the seller had no intention of dispatching the goods at the price sold.

    Not dispatching...
    Not dispatching...
    Never going to dispatch...

Maybe it should be changed to "Mark as Packed and ready to send for dispatch when I feel like it"

But even that would have been a mistake.. or a little porky pie...
  • Can I just add, if the button's only for when it has been dispatched, then why when you buy PayPal postage does it automatically mark as dispatched?
  • "because the seller had no intention of dispatching the goods at the price sold"

Which part of pull the orders, mark as dispatched and then match the invoices to them is difficult for you to understand. In some cases the person managing the eBay account may not be the person packing the parcels. So order is marked as dispatched and a member of staff who actually packs the order brings the error to the attention of someone in charge.

"Mark as Packed and ready to send for dispatch when I feel like it"

Basically yes. If the parcel isn't being dispatch the day it's marked as such then the message should be changed to state when it is being dispatched (i.e those packing on a Sunday should add a message to say ready to post tomorrow).

When you single handedly run a small business perhaps you'll understand some of the difficulties that come with it. Whilst none of these should be of any concern to the consumer, some understanding over a small mistake is much appreciated.

I thought the general consensus was that sellers shouldn't make mistakes :)

This may be true in the case of the OP, but I was replying to a post specifically about the use of the dispatch button.

Just another thing to add, as well as the paypal postage issue that obviouslythebest mentions.

MyHermes are heavily advertised on eBay and many sellers use their services. If you want them to collect tomorrow you need to book before 10pm the night before. At the time you book you have both the eBay screen and the MyHermes screen open, so now would be the ideal time to add tracking to the listing. Once you add the tracking the item shows as dispatched.
