Charging relatives for Xmas dinner

I like the way we do it in my hubby's family. sister in law cooks as she's vegan and this way she can guarantee being able to eat, and everyone brings either nibbles for everyone else or drinks. I generally bring drinks and some form of vegan friendly snack.0

I've been reading this thread since it was started & still in shock! I can't believe that someone would profit from cooking their family a Christmas dinner & I'm even more shocked that people would pay!!!
We're going to MIL's on Boxing Day for our Christmas, as MIL & I are working Xmas day, and she will get loads for Christmas dinner (even though there's only 3 of us!) all from M&S as she doesn't cook - her oven was last used last Boxing Day!! I'm taking breakfast and pudding but more so that she doesn't have to do it all, I wouldn't dream of giving her money and she would be mortified if I offered! And vice versa next Christmas when she comes to us. I can understand the families that share the cost though, it's the idea of being charged way over what the meal must actually cost & being asked to bring stuff as well that would stick in my throat!
OP I hope your friend is ready to be visited by three ghosts ... :rotfl:Proud to be a MFW :j MF aim date Nov 2018

If we go to someone elses house then sure we take along something, alcohol or the xmas cake made by me or nibbles that type of thing, certainly never arrive empty handed but asking for actual money:eek:
So do I , but agree asking for money is bloody outrageous:D:D"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

            So either
The family know it's actually a good deal, as they don't have to go to any trouble on the day but are happy to whinge about it
 or
They should just not go and one of them do the cooking [or go out themselves].
They can't moan but still go and pay up! More fool them if they do.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0

More fool the family for paying it -BUT- presumably they raised her so maybe their idea of Christmas is the same as hers and that's how they've always done it regardless of whose house it's at ?I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

            Wow... that is just ridiculous!
Imagine how much she's making if the food's nothing special (maybe quite cheap?) and she doesn't have to pay for drinks...Savings £8,865.22 £/15,000 Aiming to save enough for a house deposit.0

 Merry Christmas.You can't have everything.........where would you put it?0

It does seem to go against the spirit of xmas. Although its always hard to judge before hearing both sides. Personally for that amount of cash you could look at going at for xmas dinner (no fuss, no shopping and no washing up), although if money was tights I would ask family to bring a bottle or contribute to a course (i.e. my mum bring trifle or something)2013 Free Money - £363.44 Topcashback

Perhaps she actually wants to spend Christmas all alone and is hoping everyone will get the message!Try and do a good deed every day.0
