Tried with battery out and no change. Also the usb mouse does not work on the windows log on page. Only place it worked was while using ubuntu but the keyboard did not work there and in the repair restore she took me to via f10 but again the keyboard didnt

If it is a hardware problem they should not wipe the drive to factory settings but I wont be happy if they do becaue that will mean it wasnt a hardware problem. I could probably do that myself, I mean I've done it before on the vaio but I can't remember if I need the use of the keyboard to go through the process using f10, if so I wouldnt be able to do it anyway
    Thanx

  • If you go into the BIOS screen (esc / F2 /del) see if USB Legacy support is turned on if not set it on and try the mouse again.? (clutching at straws seems like)

  • I'd go for a straight re-install. you've backed up your data so all that is safe (except the actual programmes as they'll need re-installing) and you'll have a license key on the laptop. I'd just find a Windows 7 disk from somewhere and give it a brand new re-install. If that doesn't work then you're still in the same position you are now and then you can look at paying somebody else to look at it.

I'm just expecting you to ask if anybody can recommend somewhere in Preston to take it... because it's always the case that they turn out to be local.

Wher would that be in te bios? There doesnt seem to be that much in there and a lot of it is grayed out. Do I have to press f3 optimised defaults to get the legacy support settings? there is just main, bot, security and exit at the top
    Thanx

I was thinking that myself because we could pay out to get it repaired and it may not be hardware related so it might be worth considering factory restoring it anyway even if it doesnt work but I would need to let daughter decide on that before wiping. Do I need a keyboard to go through the f10 process then?

Well we are nowhere near peston, we are in the Nottingham area so would need someone close by if anyone has any suggestions

I forgot to say that after the lady told me to start up with f10 which I always thought was a process you could not stop in any way once started, she said she wanted to check on something, cant remember what it was but it might have been to see if the keyboard and touchpad were working in there. She assured me that no damage would be done by doing this so I went ahead.

I think I had to press the button to shut down the laptop to get out of there and it then rebooted by itself with chkdsc and there was so much I cant remember it all but there were loads of deletions and some installations and lots of references to orpaned files or whaever but the list was massive so not sure if any further damage has been done or not
    Thanx

Try removing the battery and then booting up with Ubuntu to see if the keyboard works in the Try Ubuntu option.

I will try taking battery out with ubuntu as well thanks

Just wanted to ask others opinions, I've been looking for a laptop or desktop for some time now as my own laptop is on its last legs and although I was going to wait till after christmas to get one but I'm thinking if a bargain comes up my daughter can borrow it until hers is mended.

I wasnt originally looking for a Dell but is this a bargain enough for me to go for it, there is a 15% off code to take off plus cashback from topcashback

Or there is this one, same thing with the discounts to come off

A relative that works in a school offered to take it to thier tech guy today and luckily he didn't mind having a look at it.

I really don't understand why but he plugged in a wired mouse and keyboard and they both worked, I can't understand why my mouse didnt work and I tried it endless times and it only worked in ubuntu.

He renewed the drivers for both touchpad and onboard keyboard but that didnt solve it, he said it could be a simple loose wire or something more but he couldnt tell without taking it apart and he wasnt prepared to do that as he wasn't the usual tech guy that came. The usual tech guy will probably be in after christmas now.

He said they usually charge around £40 plus parts and labour to look at it but depending on what it is it could end up costing a lot. He said he would ask and see if they would be prepared to take it in and if they do they would only charge him the £40 plus any parts needed but they wouldnt charge for the labour, not sure why but it might be to do with the school deal they do. Anyway there is no guarantee that they will do that though

In the mean time they have allowed him to borrow the keyboard and mouse until things can get sorted

The touchpad has been awkward for a while though I think because whenever I used it you would have to keep moving it around and around for ages waiting for the cursor to show up so its probably been coming for a long time.

I have a new laptop due to arrive this weds the del xps 7 in the above post so I'm hoping I will be able to view utube videos on that so I might be able to find out from there how to take it apart safely to see if it is a loose, I'm hoping its going to be that simple
    Thanx

Some Sony laptops have been reported to have a problem with the ribbon under the keyboard. A temporary fix is to apply pressure to a certain part of the keyboard. Which part I don't know.
Ribbon or keyboard replacement is of course the best long term solution.
