Really concerned

Daughters sony win7 nw20sf laptop she was doing her work on word then tried to save her work but couldnt, she suddenly couldnt click on it using the mousepad and the keyboard had stopped working.

They installed the only mouse they had which was wireless, it said it was installed but she still couldnt use it. She had to close the laptop down by the button without saving her work as she couldnt press or click on anything.

Tried to start it back up and the screen came up saying as you didnt close down properly do you want to use normal start up or safe mode etc and strangly she can use the arrows on the keyboard at that stage to select any mode she wants to and also press enter but as soon as she gets past that bit to the password she cannot put her password in because no keys will work, the cursor is flashing in the password window but she is stuck.

We closed down by the button again and put in a usb mouse in but it still doesnt work. we dont have a spare keyboard but its vey odd that the arrows work and the enter key on the safemode startup selection page but nowhere else. How do we get by this to try and attempt putting it right?
Thanx

  • Hello,

Just found this from another forum for you:

    "Problem solved

This evening my granddaughter brought the notebook to me so that I could assess the situation at first hand – previous information was from telephone conversations.

Looking at the keyboard I found a help key combination Fn-F1 which produced a menu listing several hot key combinations. One such combination was Fn-F7 which toggled the touchpad enabled/disabled.

Thanks again for your interest. Just glad the solution was so simple. Hopefully(!) my granddaughter will now read the manual when she gets back to University to-morrow."

    Hope this helps :)

Just tried that and nothing has happened :( its great info though to know for any future problems but in this case it didnt work.

I'm beginning to wonder if actually calling sony tech might help but its 2 yrs old now so I'm not sure if they will help. 2 years isnt that old for a laptop though I'm hoping its not completely gone
    Thanx

  • Try going into safe mode and see if you can do a system restore (if it'll let you in).
Sony tech won't be able to help as it's not a hardware fault. As you can use the arrow keys on the menu screen but not in Windows, it's telling you that the issue is software based and not a hardware issue.

No or I would have tried it but I have a feeling that it will probably not work because putting in a usb mouse doesnt work either. Really not feeling good about this
    Thanx

It may may not, have you tried last known good configuration (apologies for slight delay in replying was half way when my broadband flipped)

I will try that but the problem is that whatever I choose I have to put the password in and it wont let me, cant use a usb mouse or the mousepad or they keyboard when it gets to that stage

Edit - There is no last known good configuration on this, just safemode, safemode with networking and normal etc, whatever I choose hits the same problem

Does anyone know if theres any way to bypass this password to at least try and instal the usb mouse properly?
    Thanx

I'm not sure where the caps lock light will be on a vaio? I cant see one next to it, there are just 3 lights next to start up button they look like yale locks but I cant see whats in them but the middle one looks like an A inside it, perhaps it would be one of those. I will have a go

Edit - No lights show anywhere when I hit the caps lock apart from the wireless one and the other 2 that always go on when its in use. I also tried log on in safemode with command prompt but its just the same thing asking for password
    Thanx
