All Id say is keep away from Norton and Mcafee Simply as you due get a few false positives they are very memory hungry and mostly as they are so fiddly if your ever trying to do anthing such as media sharing. Ideally AVG is prob the best you can buy and the free version as long as you use zone alarm is really good too. Spyware wise spybot S and D is really good but on occasion Such as the current huge bit of spyware that is Anti Virus 2009 it cannot remove it. If you do get this nasty little bit of spyware Malware bytes anti malware is about all that removes it without having to format your drive. If anyone needs links or anything drop me a message. Oh and ditch IE use Firefox !!!!0

I'm afraid I believed all the nonsense which is posted here about Norton, and I used to run AVG or AVAST, but a trial version came on my new Vista PC and it worked fine. Got a cheap subscription and I've had no problems with either performance or false positives. Much less hassle than procuring and maintaining your own AV, firewall, etc.Jumbo

If your PC's struggling with that memory usage, buy some more memory! And I didn't have to do anything with Norton apart from clicking a few options to get music sharing working with a laptop.

If your a 'safe' user then Norton is more than likely fine. Its when the attacks come that Norton starts to buckle under the weight, and surely THATS when it should be working at its best?
My mate bought a new dell a few months ago (well probably about 5 now actually), and his son managed to infect the computer within 2 days (Which my mate was REALLY gutted about, but too damned soft to have a 'proper' go at his kids about)
Norton found said nasty, and quarantined it. However, I cant get Internet Explorer working anymore! (Possibly can once he gives me the go ahead to get rid of Norton mind)
I wouldnt touch Norton with a bargepole. Just my personal opinion.:idea:0 -
Just wondering if anyone could advise me on which antivirus software to get/download? I have had so many issues with each and am now not sure which to use!
Avast! made my computer run really slowly and gave me so many popups regarding buying thins, every day as soon as I clikced to use the internet, this added about 5 mins to me using the computer every day. Very irritating and I uninstalled this.
Agv: seemed to stop my adobe flash from working, I tried to repair, then tried to install...each time it would tell me I had done so, but then when I needed to use it, it didn't work/told me I needed to reinstall. I am sure it was AGV as when I uninstalled it, hey presto, adobe flash worked no problems!
Onecare was great as it worked smoothly with my computer software already on the computer (Vista) but not sure if it was the best value: I have heard mixed reviews- I am also not rich enough to pay that price!
Norton trial version was great, but did make things on my computer run slowly. I have heard the 2009 version doesn't do the same: is that ture? as I have seen it advertised for £30 and I could afford that- but only if its actually worth it!
McAlfee was slow too
I have also tried the tial version with talktalk and OMG this was the worst ever! every other page I would get the "internet explorer cannot display..." page up! Refreshing made no difference. I couldn't go back and would need to get up another page. Its been a week and I have uninstalled it now. Everything works as it should since uninstalling so I am sure thats what it was.
If anyone has any advice- and experience with thier virus protection, I would be really grateful as I need to do something about the security issue kinda soon! and am not sure what to try next that wont cause me so many issues!
Thankyou in advance to anyone who has any advice/offers any suggestions!
Best one I have used. Eset Smart Security.0 -
Right I use:
Windows Firewall
AVG Anti-Virus FREE
SuperAntiSpyware
Malware Bytes
I know it can mess up PC if you have more than one ant-virus but with the programmes I have installed am I protected and safe?

Its fine except id REALLY recommened a decent 3rd party firewall.
Sunbelt, Comodo and Zonealarm are the big 3.
Possibly SPYBOT too, as the IMMUNISE feature would stop certain 'pop ups' etc
As for the term 'safe'? I dont think any computer is 100% safe.:idea:0 -

Tell me about it. One of our sites was hacked a couple of months ago and we discovered just today that hacker had put in a trojan script. Had to shut entire site and delete everything from it. And as a lesson to those who think that it's only Windows that's vulnerable, that particular site and system was on a Linux server. The average home user isn't going to be subject to active hacker attacks but still you've always got to be vigilent and take it seriously."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

1. Did you disable any existing Anti-Virus system before installing ? i.e. Windows. Did you get the latest version ?
2. Try uninstalling (I use Revo uninstaller - brilliant) and re install from here:-

Thats EXACTLY why I shake my head in peoples beliefs that Linux is inpenetrable and so dont even bother with any protection.
The more people start to use it, the more the virus programmers will sit up and take notice....:idea:0 -
