Similar experience. My Spyware Doctor, being free, was not capable of removing anything, but it was supposed to keep my clean computer protected. So how come it let these mystery items through, which it then 'detected?'
Nothing else I use could see them so, like you, I got rid.
Why don't you give Super Anti-Spyware a try? You can always uninstall if you don't like it. Make sure you use the Free edition. You have to manually update and scan but not too often. The only small feature that I don't like is that when you load Outlook, , it pops up to let you know it's there, but this only lasts a few seconds and it disappears. AS I said it found the infections that SPy.Doc. did and eliminated them.
    Download from here:- http://www.superantispyware.com/
I use Spware Blaster for continuous monitoring, but it let these three through. (They were only moderate level).

Use Avast! for your anti-virus. Adaware & Super Anti-Spyware for detections of spyware. You need a firewall if you haven't already got one. This site is good for free downloads:- www.download.com
Also look on here for excellent advice:- http://www.techsupportalert.com/

Thanks, yes, I'm going to give that a try.
  • Absolute tosh! My Norton processes are using less than 15k of memory, with a peak usage of 150k during scans. If your PC's struggling with that memory usage, buy some more memory! And I didn't have to do anything with Norton apart from clicking a few options to get music sharing working with a laptop.

I'm afraid I believed all the nonsense which is posted here about Norton, and I used to run AVG or AVAST, but a trial version came on my new Vista PC and it worked fine. Got a cheap subscription and I've had no problems with either performance or false positives. Much less hassle than procuring and maintaining your own AV, firewall, etc.

Mate im running a core 2 duo 3.16 with 4gb of ddr2 1066RAM so please dont tell me I need more memory and any decent review site i.e not pc world will detail how poor norton can be. I notice you comment about not maintaining your own firewall all well and good norton will indeed do whatever it feels like or thinks it should to thats great until you need to create a firewall rule. RE music sharing try getting that to run using a xbox 360 or NAS box works but can be a pain. Finally when your norton expires good luck removing it as it tatoos your registry and gets in everywhere. Please note this is not haveing a go at you I just feel your tosh comment is harsh I agree if you want something simple never worry about it (until you try to change something) yeah go with norton but there are far more flexible cheaper options out there that do the job alot better

If you use Revo Uninstaller, this will delete e verything including bits of files and Registry items. It is free to use.

I'm afraid that Revo will not get rid of Norton - you need to download a program from their site to finally get rid of everything.

@standards84, my comment was on the perception that Norton slows things down and is resource-hungry. I believed all the negative postings till I tried it myself. I am aware of its limitations, but every program has them. Look at the number of different suggestions on here - it's incredibly difficult for someone who knows little about computers to make a good decision. At least a single package gives you everything without too much hassle.

I've used many of the recommendations on here - Avast, AVG, Comodo, Online Armor, Kerio, etc, etc, etc - but got sick of having to change / update / manage them on a regular basis.

  • Just got a new computer with Vista Home Premium, and want to put some protection on it.

Thinking the following will be ok, can someone please check and confirm for me?

    1. Avast
    2. MalwareBytes

already got the windows firewall and windows defender turned on.

    any other suggestions welcome.

    TIA

You ever tried ESET (Smart Security)? That's the one I recommend as the absolute best as far as I've ever tried. Smallest footprint of any security solution I've seen, least intrusive and most effective. Also the least work setting up as well.

SPYBOT to use the IMMUNISATION feature (Stops nasties at the source)
You might also want to consider a decent firewall (Sunbelt, comodo or zonealarm)

Why do you think Revo wouldn't work? It gets rid of left over files and registry entries, which is all the Norton Removal Tool does anyway. If anything Revo would remove more including the stuff the removal tool leaves behind.
