I have just installed avast and trying to registrar it but I can't get the letters that I have to type at the bottom of the form to appear. I am using firefox and have even tried doing it through IE but still no luck. any help would be great
    Thanks

So what anti-virus was installed before and was it thoroughly removed before installing Avast?

I have just removed Norton and installed avast at the recommendation of other mse users. I also added sunbelt firewall which I have had to remove as it was taking 5 minutes for an internet page to load . Everything is working fine now. I have a router with a firewall and windows firewall turned on.
  • I personally use Sophos because i get a free membership with my university. They seem reliable and going on what ive tried in the past (the big names) it doesnt bog down your computer as much and seems to be more responsive.

Still pretty poor though in my experience. Another one where the freeware ones seem to be better. And Eset/NOD32 far better still. False economy really.

I am currently running on a 3 yr old PC with XP

    PC Tools Firewall
    AVG Anti-Virus
    Windows Defender
    Spywareblaster
    C Cleaner

I have had no known problems, but as I am taking delivery of a new PC with Vista tomorrow, wqas wondering if I should stick with the same set-up or would you recommend a new list of products?

    Thanks, MATH

CCleaner isnt anything to do with security, though it does delete 'temp' files where some can reside
Id suggest exchanging AVG for AVAST (AVG seems to have the odd problem with my Vista, and many people have reported problems with it)
Id also suggest MALWAREBYTES as a secondary scanner

I agree with ALIENRik that Avast works better with Vista, and it is a really good prog. However, bear in mind that Vista comes pre-installed with it's own firewall and anti-virus. You should switch these off when you install PCTools firewall and Avast, otherwise they will compete with each other and slow down your PC. Go to Security Centre on your PC and switch them off, or like me I have left the Windows Firewall running and just installed Avast!
Plus of course Super Anti SPyware, AdAware and C. Cleaner. As mentioned by others C.Cleaner and Adaware are not running all the time, only when you want them to scan your computer. For everyone on here, a useful tool to completely uninstall programs, is Revo Uninstaller. Completely free and works like a dream, gets rid of all the bits left in your PC, when you use windows uninstall. Just Google it for the download site.
