When I looked on their forums, I found many others had problems with the same process. The support people were very unhelpful, saying something like, "It shouldn't do that - you must be doing something wrong". I uninstalled it within 36 hours.
I've installed Avast on quite a few computers, I've never seen anything like what you describe, so I presume it must be under very specific software/hardware conditions. Also I don't recall anyone every posting about it here where it's been recommended so many times."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I think odd things do happen like that. Until a few weeks ago I had the free version of an anti-spyware program on my machine (PC Doctor) with no problems and then, out of the blue, its processes began to eat up my system resources.
I switched it off, as I had other programs to do much the same job, and things have been fine ever since.0 -
Please can someone tell me the best all-round free firewall software.
Thanks,0 -

I agree with Superscaper, never ever heard of Avast! slowing down a computer before. I also used Spy Doctor, without problems, until last week, when it reported it had found 3 infections, but then wanted me to subscribe to eliminate them. Uninstalled it and now using Super Anti-Spyware (free edition), which found and deleted the same 3 infections immediately.
Similar experience. My Spyware Doctor, being free, was not capable of removing anything, but it was supposed to keep my clean computer protected. So how come it let these mystery items through, which it then 'detected?'
Nothing else I use could see them so, like you, I got rid.0 -
I have just installed openSuse on an oldish laptop, anyone got any hints as to a firewall suitable for using with this distro? The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

There are still a few requests for best security programs. Apart from here, this site is a good place to look. It was mentioned in these forums a few years ago, and I've been recommending it since then - comprehensive reviews of free software for all types of programs. Have a browse round every now and again...
