All programs use registries. And when theyre installed or uninstalled they tend to leave 'dead' ones behind.
The CCLEANER one is completely safe to use, and the ONLY one id recommend to use as messing around with registry programs can kill the computer! Make sure you BACK UP the registry when it asks:idea:0 -

Another tool I can recommend is Revo Uninstaller - much more thorough than Windows uninstall as after uninstalling it then searches your computer for bits and pieces left in the system and deletes them as well!

Ok, in simple terms please.... I have read over several pages of this thread but it is too indepth for me.
I run Windows Vista and am getting rid of McAffe.
I have spybot, ad-aware and (can't remember anti-virus thingy even though I have just spoke to someone about it).
What is best anti-virus to run with vist? Avast?
My wireless router has a firewall and McAffe (which I can't do much about)
Is running each of these once a month enough to be good practice.0 -

for basics, you need a firewall (a SOFTWARE one, the router wont stop most things) and an anti virus
COMODO, ZONEALARM and SUNBELT are the top 3 firewalls
AVG, AVAST and AVIRA are the top 3 anti virus programs
I would also recommend MALWAREBYTES as a secondary scanner
and SPYBOT to stop popups etc (IMMUNISE with it to, should you use it):idea:0 -

Defender is not a Firewall, it is resident protection.
Details HERE.

OK. My mistake, I thought the firewall was part of Windows Defender. But all Windows with XP Service Pack 2 and later, have a built in firewall, which can be turned on or off. See here:-

Unfortunately, windows XPs firewall is absolute junk as it doesnt stop programs connecting OUTWARDS (Spyware for example):idea:0
