what is registry cleaner? should i use that function?

All programs use registries. And when theyre installed or uninstalled they tend to leave 'dead' ones behind.
The CCLEANER one is completely safe to use, and the ONLY one id recommend to use as messing around with registry programs can kill the computer! Make sure you BACK UP the registry when it asks

does kaspersky not do it then? it may work better but it isnt as straight forward to use as norton was.
I've used C.Cleaner for ages and find it excellent, so why mess around with anything else. C.cleaner is not runnning unless you open it, so it is not using any vital memory resources.

I used Glary Registry Repair when my PC kept crashing or running slowly and it sorted it out - brilliant! Check it out here:-

Another tool I can recommend is Revo Uninstaller - much more thorough than Windows uninstall as after uninstalling it then searches your computer for bits and pieces left in the system and deletes them as well!

Can anyone out there tell me PLEASE how to stop my name going out with any email I send (on BT broadband)?? I'm sure there must be a way but I'm not that techie so need it in easyspeak please.
Thanks if you can help soon
Open your mail program (I am using Windows Mail) but Outlook Express is the same. Click on Tools, then Accounts, then highlight your email address you want to alter by clicking on it. Next click on Properties, under the General Tab you will see the details of your email and the name you have chosen, highlight this, delete it then enter your initials or your nickname, click Apply or OK and that should change it.

  • Ok, in simple terms please.... I have read over several pages of this thread but it is too indepth for me.

I run Windows Vista and am getting rid of McAffe.

I have spybot, ad-aware and (can't remember anti-virus thingy even though I have just spoke to someone about it).

What is best anti-virus to run with vist? Avast?

My wireless router has a firewall and McAffe (which I can't do much about)

Is running each of these once a month enough to be good practice.

for basics, you need a firewall (a SOFTWARE one, the router wont stop most things) and an anti virus
COMODO, ZONEALARM and SUNBELT are the top 3 firewalls
AVG, AVAST and AVIRA are the top 3 anti virus programs

I would also recommend MALWAREBYTES as a secondary scanner
and SPYBOT to stop popups etc (IMMUNISE with it to, should you use it)

I run Avast! with Vista Home Premium and it is great, not obtrusive and updates automatically. Much better than McAfee which I dumped. If you have a firewall in your router, you also have a software one built in (Windows Defender), so that should be fine. Just make sure it is switched on. You could run Spyware Doctor or AdAware in additon (or even both) as these are programs which are only running when you decide to run them.

OK. My mistake, I thought the firewall was part of Windows Defender. But all Windows with XP Service Pack 2 and later, have a built in firewall, which can be turned on or off. See here:-

Unfortunately, windows XPs firewall is absolute junk as it doesnt stop programs connecting OUTWARDS (Spyware for example)
