Ive just started using AVIRA anti virus in place of AVGs
Certainly quicker to scan and tests have shown it to have one of the best 'virus definition updates' going.
Only downside is every time it updates it throws a POPUP to try ang get me to buy the whole package (Nothing major though):idea:0 -

Spyware Blaster & SpyBot 'innoculate' IE and Firefox from a whole host of bad sites etc; Firefox also uses a Google-based anti-malware website tool which blocks/warns of 'bad' websites which is incredibly useful.
Hardware router firewall
NOD32 software firewall
NOD32 antivirus
web-based email (gmail)
Firefox browser
I also run in a limited account which isn't annoying as people say once you get everything set up using the admin account and occasional run-as admin.
I also give the online Windows OneCare free compelte scan a go once every 6 months or so- and have windows defender running in the background. Not had a single problem/virus etc on this pc.
The Google Pack is a good place to start for anyone who's completely swamped by ideas of where to start - only one or two security packages but they're decent enough.0 -
Does avg use alot of resources0

Hi, im very confused!
Ive had my laptop for a year now (ESystem intel core duo 1.73ghz Vista program) when i bought it i bought it with Norton now its running out in 4 days.
I'm looking at getting a freebie, so AVG seems to be is recommended on here?
I have no idea id the norton did firewall (what ever that is!?) I'm afraid im not technically minded at all! i dont want to download loads of things that will slow my compter down but can someone give me a run down of what i might need and why?
Also can i download them before Norton finishes? or do i wait until Norton ends?
Thank you!!0 -

AVG doesnt have a firewall
You need a 3rd party firewall. Zonealarm, comodo and Sunbelt are the main ones
A firewall ASKS you if you want a certain program to access the internet, or if a signal from the net is allowed to communicate with your computer.
If for example you had some nasty spyware on your computer, it could easily send information OUTWARDS from your computer. A firewall would STOP TO ASK you first:idea:0
