Do Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Free and Avast do this too? Or do you have to remember to manually update?

I use Avast and by default it checks for updates every 240 minutes.

Am ditching Norton for something better. Norton is only AV have ever tried and I like is its "LiveUpate" - not sure how it works but I think every time I connect to internet it automatically checks to see if there are any new virus definitons from Symantec website and if there are it downloads them - I don't have to do anything at all.

What am concerned about is some ultra new virus might appear. I think my NAV will get the update from Symantec website as soon as its available.

Reason am leaving NAV - subscription expiring next month, have read it slows computer and is massive program.
The reason I ditched Norton was purely because it slows your computer down. I now use Kaspersky, which is pretty good, except it is too stringent, by that I mean it warns you about things that you know are legit.

Don't understand why times vary with same prog.

Really depends on what ELSE your computer is doing at the time. CPU AND hard drive usage will change each and every time.
Also, just because Norton scans FASTER doesnt necessarily mean its the better anti virus (I personally wouldnt touch it)

  • I've tried loads of antivirus software and now I won't use anything but AVG free edition, I don't find it slow like most others are and it works well too, finding any threats. You can get it free on their site http://free.avg.com/

I used to pay through the nose for nortons, and now use AVG, which so far has been great (about 6 months).

Actually I moved from using AVG to Eset NOD32and found a huge improvement in speed and lightness on resources. Doing development work and also playing games I could see how much of a huge impact and interference even AVG has on resources. I can't now imagine using anything other than Eset because even all the free AV is too slowing.

I too have used Norton, McAfee &Co. tried AVG, but have now settled on AVAST, which I like very much. It is unobtrusive, works quietly away in the background and updates automatically, with just a quick message to let you know that it has done so. Completely free of course. You can download from here:-

Ihttp://free.prevx.com/ seem to have acquired a Security Scanner called Prevx CSI that I do not remember downloading !! Does it come with Windows Vista ? I have 'googled it' and cannot see anything detrimental. This is the link:-
