sorted thankyou. you dont use no more apart from these 2

Thats not actually true. Use one OR the other (theyre resident anti virus scanners)

But you might also consider (which are fine to install WITH the anti virus software) ~
SPYBOT (stops certain popups and spyware)
And AVAST (does its own thing ~ scanner only)
And a decent firewall wouldnt go amiss (I use COMODO, others like ZONEALARM ~ but ive personally had program conflicts with zone')
    All are free :)

    tradetime Why do they clash
Anti-virus programs often have active parts, the two you mentioned do, that is to say they can both be scanning / monitoring the system at the same time, it is not uncommon for them to interpret each others behavior as malicious and attempt to terminate each other.
It is possible to have two separate AV's on one system if one of them is passive ie only operates as an on demand scanner. In such a case you would disable the active one to allow the on demand scan, then re-activate it.
Be advised there is no guarantee the two AV will clash, or that if they do it will happen immediately, just that it is highly likely that sooner or later it will happen.
Not to mention that running 2 AV's on your system will be unnecessarily heavy on resources, and overkill from a security perspective.

  • Hi all, A good free Antivirus includes, virus, worm & trojan protection, scan & removal, smart updates, file guard, e-mail guard.
I have been using this for about 12 months now with no problems & find it very user friendly.

  • I use AVG 8.0 - Zone Alarm - Adaware - Malwarebytes - Ccleaner - Norton free scan.
  • Hi.

My free trial of F Secure Anti Virus runs out soon and I was just wondering what sort of set up I would need to replace this.

Seen AVG 8.0 mentioned on several threads but would I need to run this with anything else?

Sorry if I seem a bit noob, but only have a limited knowledge of these things.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Id recommend a good firewall ~ I use COMODO personally
also SPYBOT and ADAWARE would be fine for spyware too

imho AVG 8 is fine, or AntiVir, or Avast, for free av protection.
If you are going to use a traditional old style security setup, then you may want to consider something like SuperAntiSpyware (SAS) as well they have a free on demand scanner, or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware seems to be popular these days.
If you still use Internet Explorer, I would consider installing Firefox or Opera as an alternative. If you are interest in advancing your security I recommend using a Sandbox such as Sandboxie for all online activities.
My advice is don't get caught in the old fashion of bogging your system down with loads of security apps. Users should have enough info to keep it simple nowadays

  • Avira AntiVir Personal Edition
    Comodo Pro Firewall
    Spyware Terminator
Spybot Search & Destroy (+TeaTimer and SDHelper)
    SUPERantispyware

    Firefox
    BT HomeHub hardware firewall

    and what I don't recommend:
Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm Free, any security software made by Microsoft (especially onecare) and AVG.

Am ditching Norton for something better. Norton is only AV have ever tried and I like is its "LiveUpate" - not sure how it works but I think every time I connect to internet it automatically checks to see if there are any new virus definitons from Symantec website and if there are it downloads them - I don't have to do anything at all.

Do Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Free and Avast do this too? Or do you have to remember to manually update?

What am concerned about is some ultra new virus might appear. I think my NAV will get the update from Symantec website as soon as its available.

Reason am leaving NAV - subscription expiring next month, have read it slows computer and is massive program.

AVG, AVAST and AVIRA all auto update
