  • I use avast and I've had no problems yet, AVG I think may be more thorough as it stops me playing some computer games so I stopped using it.

I'd say it is probably less intelligent..........

Avira is another favourite, very light on resources so it won't slow your 'older' computer too much.

I was hopeing for some advice on antivirus. I'm looking to purchase a new laptop this week and will need anti virus/internet security. The laptop i'm looking at has the option of norton for an extra £29.99 which covers three pcs. Should I opt for this or is there a better cheaper alternative? We are with Talk Talk for the phone and they do supply security with their broadband package, is this any good? I do use my laptop for internet banking and shopping. Any help would be much appreciated. :)

I am running Avast Free, its more than average effective.
  • I'm running W7Pro with ESET NOD32 AV, MalwareBytes, CCleaner, Defraggler and a Hosts file that blocks and prevents unwanted ads and scripts.

The router is configured with WPA2, MAC Filtered and the IP range completely changed. (corporate IP ranges).

    Simple and effective.

I have been running AVAST FREE for some years with no problems, but unfortunately last week I had a virus which completely shut down my PC. I don't know how it got thru:mad::mad::(

Anyway I am now running TREND MICRO, don't know if it's better or what, I will see.

All AV's will miss malware at some point.

It's far better to try to establish the infection vector and close that than change the AV.

At the well known shop where I took my PC ( and where they charged me a huge amount of money to 'repair' it, I don't think they bothered with that. They just said that it was infected with several virus's, backed up my data for me and then wiped everything. (yes I could have done that myself but I am only a girl!!!)

    Do this for me.

Download SecurityCheck and save it to your Desktop.

    Link
    • Double click SecurityCheck to run it (XP), or right click & choose "Run as Administrator" (Vista, Win7)
    • Follow the on-screen instructions.
    • When finished, a Notepad document should open called checkup.txt
    • Post the contents of that here.
