    Hi All,

So my Avast (paid for) AV runs out in a few days time. Should I purchase another AV (Avast? AVG? Norton?) Or is it really safe to just download the free MS Security Essentials and just use that please?

Oh, I do have Malwarebytes on the computer but haven't used it since December. I will do shortly though!

Look forward to your replies and thanks in advance.

    All the best,

I've been using Microsoft SE & Windows Firewall since M$ sorted them out a few years back (Windows firewall used to be dire)

Upgrading to Windows 7 is also a good idea (XP has been turned inside out by the naughty boys and all it takes is to be missing some update or other to become vulnerable. Plus, it's not fully supported any more)

I remember reading a good quote that states, "Windows 7 still has the security of a drunk teenager in a sports car"..
If you got a lot of viruses using XP then chances are you will get the same viruses using 7!
Its still a Windows OS and 7 requires nearly the same amount of patches as XP which is still supported with SP3 until April 2014.

If you take the time to make XP secure you will "not" be any safer upgrading to 7..
If your hardware is older then upgrading to 7 will be horrible, chances are you will be missing drivers and the user experience will be painful.

When you scratch under the eye candy of 7 and overlook the slimmed down features from Vista, its the same old Windows engine powering 7..

The only way to make a pc secure is for the user to take a couple of hours to learn how to use it, if their stuck then they only have to ask and people on this forum will give their time to help..

For all the criticisms of Windows, nobody to my knowledge has yet managed to make an OS as versatile as Windows with the security of a Unix OS.

I'm afraid the mathematic symbol is lost on me, so I may misinterpret your meaning, but I was simply referring to the fact that nobody has yet provided me with an OS other than Windows that can play the latest games out of the box while still maintaining the robustness of a *nix distro. If it also included ease of use for the leyman, I'd happily stop building Windows machines for customers and save myself a packet.

    Good day all,

I am on XP Windows, and I have the following:

    Antivirus - Microsoft Secrity Essentials
    Firewalls - Windows Firewall
    Adware/Spyware removal - noithing

My PC becomes slow at times.

    A few questons:

    1) Am I fully protected?

    2) Should I down load any anti spyware/mailware and if so, anyone have any freelinks?

    thanks in advance

I have seen in my daily paper an advert for a company called Trendmicro. There web page is trendmicro.co.uk. They provide, amongst other things, a security system based on the cloud. As I am always looking for better security, has anybod heard of them or used them please.

I used XP for several years, and took advice from various web forums including bleepingcomputer.com (the best if you need help with Windows). So I downloaded AVG free antivirus and Zonealarm firewall. Activated them and shut down Windows own versions. It's not out of paranoia that I say Microsoft spies on everyone, it's just a fact. So I recommend that you use as little of their propriety software as possible.

Of course you must do as you please with your machine.

I've converted to the Ubuntu operating system. It's free of charge, and free from viruses etc. And you can try it without even installing it. :j whoopee!

Trend Micro have been around for years. A well established company.

Check out anti-virus-software-review.com Trend gets a good average score.
