Avast is the way.

The excellent newly released Linux Mint 13 (Maya) cinnamon edition will keep you free from viruses trojans etc and works really well as a beautiful looking operating system.
In case you still need Windows 7 etc install Maya as a dual boot alongside it so you have the choice of which to boot (Just keep to Linux if you want to be safe)0 -
I have Avast for virus checking
Windows firewall
and Spyware SaD for obviousness.0 -
Wow! - I've had a dodgy connection since Thursday and Virgin have only acknowledged today (Sunday) that there is a problem in my area!
So it's acceptable to be without a decent connection for several days before something is done about it!
So if you are told by Virgin that they need to reset their hub, because there is "not a problem in your area" don't take their word for it.
Often a problem with various companies using BT lines (eg Orange in my area). They tell you there is no fault, but BT tell you that there is work going on at the local exchange. Bring on Local Loop Unbundling for everyone!

I'm pretty careful on where I surf, never click on aything I dont trust. Ive had Norton for the past 4 years on 2 laptops, never had anything nasty come through. I have found spybot to be quite useful too.
As long as you keep everything up to date on Norton, it seems to do the job0 -
I have previously used Kaspersky, Bit Defender and have recently changed to AVG, 4 PC licenses for 2 years, all Internet Security products. I like most of AVG but am not pleased with the continual Cookie advice, which interrupts every visit to everything I do. It asks me to set a rule for a cookie, which I set, believing that will be the rule from now on and I won't be bothered with that one again. OH, no! Move to something else and the same question pops up on the next visit. Then it asks me to set another rule for the same thing. When I do, it says that it is unable to do so, because it has already been set!
I should have stayed with Bit Defender, but AVG was cheaper. Now I know why!I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

A have to give a shout about Comodo as their free 2012 version is a massive improvement over previous versions.0

Hello, I've currently got Microsoft Security Essentials installed on my computer, but also have AdAware Free. Do I need both or do they cover the same things?
Many thanks.0 -
Unistall ad-aware - they cover the same ground & it now includes an AV module.
If you don't already have it, install Malwarebytes as an on-demand scanner.

I use three browser, Firefox with Noscript loaded, Crome and IE with no security set for the odd site that doesnt like Netscape
Running as standard on boot are
Sysinternals Process Explorer
Startup Monitor
AVG free
NetMonitor (to watch outgoing ports for unauthorized process useage)
Ready to fire up on a write protected memory stick:
Malwarebytes
Registry Mechanic 5
Superantispyware
plus some other tools to check internet activity, and process usage.
I also have a second HDD with a bare boot and tools on, so i can switch boot in the bios and repair the main drive whilst its offline. To that end there is a basic image of the drive on the memory stick, along with a copy of Ghost 7.0.
I use a hardware firewall, a nokia box running SecurePlatform and Check Point Firewall, and theres a virus checker box in the DMZ of this firewall where all incoming downloads go first.
I use two Trucrypt double password encrypted volumes for personal stuff. Since Virgin decided to start looking over my shoulder and noting everything I say and do on the net, i now connect using a VPN tunnel to a random server somewhere in the world randomly. I sweep the machine about every 6 weeks with Evidence Eliminator 6. I also use Hushmail and Private Idaho encryption for my secure mail. ]
I also use a 'dirty' mobile, and am about to switch over to VOIP for the landline, to defeat interception.
When I want GCHQ, MI6, CIA and the NSA to read what im doing, ill tell them, otherwise they can mine there own damn business.**** I hereby relieve MSE of all legal responsibility for my post and assume personal responsible for all posts.
