I haven't used Mailwasher for a couple of years, but the basic principle hasn't changed. It compares email addresses against external lists of dodgy addresses, and your own white and blacklist. You can also filter based on address or subject text.

The problem is that so many email addresses are spoofed, so they are virtually meaningless in combating spam. I found it too much of a blunt instrument and stopped using it, epsecially when he started charging for multiple accounts.

I'd go for a cleverer spam filter, which builds up a list of words in emails which you think are spam or ham. It does this by learning from your first emails which you need to classify for it, and then quickly learns what are good or bad. I use popfile, which is open source (and of course free ), but there are a few others. Have a look at the Best 46 Freeware Utilities site for their latest recommendations. This site is worth bookmarking to keep up to date with what's out there.

Can someone help advise me what is the best anti-virus software to use? looking for cheap & cheerful - had McAfee, has about 2 days left - should I just renew this (on quidco with 15%?)
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

I use AVG free version. It is used by many people now and I have never heard a bad thing said about it. it's also nice that it won't cost you anything.

Go to: http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/Ing/us/tpl/tp101 to download it.

On thing to warn you about. It's best to uninstall any other antivirus before installing AVG.

I was on the verge of going for AVG myself about 2 years ago until I researched various sites that test AV progs.

Sadly AVG FAILED more often than it passed the tests on one of the sites.

I instead went for the best on the Market bar none - NOD32

I use Mcafee Enterprise and never had problems with it, doesn't cost me anything either.

I have just checked 6 review sites and AVG comes out well on them. NOD32 is only reviewed on one site.

I think this is a case of being able to find a review for/against any of the AV progs on the market.

Looking through this thread AVG is recommended numerous times and nobody seems to not like it.

Anyone can check here for themselves here:

    http://www.eset.com/company/awards.php

    and from that page:

"ESET has achieved 39 Virus Bulletin VB 100% awards, more than any other vendor. In Virus Bulletin's comparative tests, ESET's product has not missed an 'In the Wild' virus sample since May 1998."

Esset are the manufacturers of NOD32.

NOD32 IS generally regarded as the best with F-secure and Kaspersky generally also well rated
