anyone else on here able to give a more confident answer on this ?
Never run two firewalls. If you use a third party one you must disable XP's firewall as they conflict and slow down your system.0 -
Thanks guys just downloaded zonealarm and disabled the xP one and its working fine aparently i am now in stealth mode WOW0

Glad to have been of help.
other progs I'd reccomend in the area of security and keeping the system running smoothly include:
Ad-aware personal - FREE - Detects and removes spyware
Spybot Search & Destroy - FREE - as above (most folks reccomend using both as one will catch stuff the other missess) . Also spybot has a couple of other real neat things - my fave of which is Teatimer - which locks the registry down from any changes to the registry that you haven't asked for/OK'd.
CrapCleaner - FREE - and superb. Windows does have a built in crap removal - but this is soooo good and very easy to use and darned effective. - Clears temp files and other "dead wood".
Firefox or Opera - Better browsers than IE and will help avoid getting spyware/adware on your system in the 1st place

Do little and often
Please stop using the word "of" when you actually mean "have" - it's damned annoying :mad:0 -
I've been using this for a while and have completely forgotten about anything to do with spyware, malware or virused. An absolute gem of a program. Light, easy and extremely effective protection. What a brilliant concept as well.

Try it and see what you think.:beer:Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0 -

I've been using the Windows firewall since SP2 came out, and I've used both Zonealarm and Sygate firewalls in tandem with the Windows firewall without ill effects or any noticeable slowdown.
BTW, judderman62's suggestions are all valid. For a more comprehensive list of free stuff, have a look at the the best 46 free utilities site. Can't remember who recommended it first in this forum, but it is well worth browsing regularly :cool:Jumbo

I have tried to download Zonealarm and Kerio separately (I did not have them both installed at the same time, they downloaded ok but when I tried to connect to IE or Firefox, they both closed down windows and restarted the computer, so I had to uninstall them and go back to Windows XP firewall.0

After years of Norton IS, I took the advice of many on this thread and
trialled NOD 32 and Kerio PF. NOD is terriffic so will deffo purchase and persuade my two sons to go in with me to get the three license option (all behind wired NETGEAR router LAN) . Am pretty happy with KPF.
I was already using Ewido free but am giving Counter Spy a whirl
I am happy to spend another £20 or so but only if it is warranted
I want to be secure and am pretty careful about downloading etc (unike my sons no doubt)
Questions /Advice -
is the purchase of KPF after trial period worth the extras.......and/or
Is it worth paying for the extra elements of either Counter Spy or Ewidodont confuse me with facts I need to think here!!!!0 -

Mailwasher would be a useful extra.

I have used Norton for years and paid a yearly subscription, but now I've been advised to ditch it and install:
AVG
spybot
ad-ware
sygate
CCleaner
which are all free and I'm told do an excellent job.I've already install them on the new lappy, but shortly I'll do the same with the older one.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0
