Please speak slowly as i am blonde and female and really take a long time to grasp this stuff.
Ive read through this thread from start to finish and im still no better off. Lots of names repeating of different protectors but i have no idea what any of them do or what they are for.

Download AVG anti virus. It's good and there's a free version.

Yes, they try to hide it
Just click on 'AVG products' on the left hand side of their home page and it's the 8th item down.
It's not recomended to use 2 anti-virus programs at the same time. McAfee may interfere with AVG and visa versa.

Its your own data a hacker is after. (eg. credit card numbers, banking information, personal information). Using some/all information like this, a skilled hacker can steal your identity.
In addition, you're a prime target for a hacker to install a virus/trojan so they can use your PC to launch cyber attacks on others.
I remember once after reinstalling a XP machine, I connected it up to the Internet to download all the security updates but the PC kept getting hacked before the download could complete.0 -
A few weeks ago Aldi were selling AV/anti spam/firewall software for £6.99, I bought a copy and intend to use it when my Norton Internet Securities expires in a few months. It's called "Select eScan" and produced by Focus Multimedia Ltd.
I am curious as to if anyone else has bought and used this software, and what thier opinons are, if any.

A search of Google came up with no mainstream independent reviews, and their site has lots of reviews from sites I've never heard of. So you're buying something to protect your computer about which very little is known. It may be excellent, but it may be !!!!!!. Do you want to be at the (b)leading edge of trying it out? Unless someone can come up with a better review, I'd stick to those recommended in this forum.
FWIW, I ditched Norton when the sub ran out and went for free Avast, but couldn't stop it hogging the CPU. The experts on their forums were no good: I found load of similar complaints and their reply was always "It's doing that for a GOOD reason". It may work for you, but I ditched it and went for AVG-Free. Both have been recommended here by several people and on the 46 Best Freeware Utilities websiteJumbo
