I have just installed Symantec Anti Virus on my laptop. My Linksys wireless router has a hardware firewall.
Should i use Sygate or ZoneAlarm? Which is better?
Also going to install Adaware.
I have jsut built the computer. is this sufficient protection or should i add anything else?Filiss0 -

I have three segmented networks at home.
1. Servernet - one server (web+mail) protected by IPTABLES and a DLink router. I forward ports 80, 443, 25 to the machine and use 993 (IMAP/S) to it too. SSH is open on a non-standard port with RSA key for authentication (no access to root, no password login)
2. Downstairs - Linksys WRT54GL running Thibor14 firmware with ports opened only for PAP2 VoIP gateway.
3. Upstairs - Linksys WRT54GL/Thibor14 with no ports open.
Unplug 'n' Pray = Disabled
All PCs are either linux or WinXP with Sygate PF
Common browser is Firefox
Nets 2 and 3 have DDNS aliases set on the router which is defined in IPTABLES on the server - meaning that the open ports on the DLink router do not mean open to all - thus giving another layer to protect against attack.
The server runs f-prot for linux scanning all incoming emails.
AVG runs on all Windows PCs.
No PC is run with admin rights.
I rarely, if ever, have to run spyware checks (my wife surfs safely with Firefox and my settings for cookie management).
I rarely, if ever, have to reinstall an OS.
I believe the one MAIN reason for so many home computers BECOMING COMPROMISED is the simplicity of getting XP and running with system-wide FULL RIGHTSIn the United Kingdom 200,000 people are bitten by dogs every year and some people will die as a result. and I do believe that you could simply copy firefox.exe to removable media and use the core of the browser on any PC....In the United Kingdom 200,000 people are bitten by dogs every year and some people will die as a result.
