  • I've had Avast for ages, spy-bot newly but a little irritating had it on and off over the years. I've just downloaded (paid for) Registry reviver. It was 25.00 to start with, after the 'free scan' then I thought sod that, then a message came up with it for half price!

It seems to have solved my Vista boot problem so I'm quite happy fingers crossed!

You can get similar (and far safer) programs for free

If I buy a new Kaspersky internet security 2009 3 user, uninstall the one I've already got, and use the free upgrade that Martinsdoll mentioned, would that work ok and give me my licence for the next 12 months, or are there any hitches I need to be aware of?
The 2009 3 user version is currently on ebay for about £11, so that would be a good saving if it worked.

Kaspersky upgrades are always free from one version to the next, in my experience. They normally only charge if there is a big 'version gap'. (Software firms hate supporting old versions: It costs them money to keep them alive and it doesn't generate new revenue or advertising blurb.)

Canvas your friends and family and get them to join a 'Kaspersky Klan' of 3 computers/people and split the cost on a per machine basis. This typically works out at about £5-£6 per machine per year when buying the software from Amazon or eBay. Dirt cheap for the peace of mind it brings. I've instigated several such groups locally.
NOTE: The latest such group tell me that there's a 3-month time limit between the installation of the 1st and 3rd licence for the 3-user KIS 2010 pack they bought, but I haven't confimed that myself.

I've not bothered to upgrade the KIS 2009 I bought in February: the AV engine is the same as the 2010 version AFAIK. I might do it in an idle moment, sometime, just to see what's new in the user interface.

There are a lot of posts on here with people buying internet security products, im curious, why you would pay for these when there are products like Microsoft Security Essentials, CCleaner and Windows 7 / Vista Firewall Control , all FREE, and by all reviews are just as effective ?

Ive used nearly all of these product on these forums at various points and im pretty sure any extras you are paying are generally overkill.

Is it a case of 'im paying for it , so it must be better than free' or am i missing something.

    Cheers

    For me:

Antivirus Eset NOD64 (64bit) Out strips Norton and Kaspersky)
    Firewall - Windows and Routers
    Spyware Blaster (Good Hosts file)
    Firefox 64bit (Minefield)
    Win7 64bit
    Spybot.
    Windows Defender.
SFC (System file checker MS tool)

Even with all those I still get Spyware but it never works as Im running 64bit apps and they aren't coded for that.

Yup, you're missing something - the facts.

Go to www.av-comparatives.org and read the reports (both of them, including the notes, they're important). Then make your mind up.

    Don't trust 'reviews' unless...
    - They're from an independent (non-profit) source
    - They state the exact test methodology
    - They publish the full sample details and results
Anything less than this is just hearsay.
  • In response to computer security. I use avast which an IT friend of mine advises. Free and so far so good!:)
