Thanks for the info - as my 2009 one is about to expire. Does the free upgrade cover the 3 computers as well?

Hi elsien, yes it does cover all 3 computers, but as your 2009 edition is about to expire, would it be worth you installing the free upgrade to the 2010 version?

The Kaspersky licence only lasts for 1 year from the date of installation on any given computer, whether it's 2009 or 2010 version. So you will only get the 1 years worth or either if you see what I mean.

Once the licence expires you would still need to pay for another years worth of protection, or maybe buy another 3 user licence to maintain the protection.

The 2010 version is just a more up to date version than 2009.

Also please do read this post from another member re uninstalling 2009 first, but I must admit I didn't do this, as I was unaware that I needed to, and just followed the steps from the Kaspersky forum websise re the upgrade. and have not had any problems so far (Touch wood!)

I do hope that all makes sense and helps you.

kapersky is better than EVERYTHING else

    Not any more, I'm afraid.
I've used Kaspersky for many years because the old Hamburg University tests always showed it to be first class and it was much more efficient than McAfee or Norton. Then Hamburg stopped running the tests, so there was no reliable comparison data - just vague editorial and advertising hype. In the absence of any genuine test results I just carried on using Kaspersky and was very happy with it.

Then I recently found www.av-comparatives.org and got a wake-up call!
Kaspersky is still good, but it's no longer the best. Symantec/Norton has advanced by leaps and bounds and is now seriously good, although expensive. A lot of others also beat Kaspersky on basic detection of known malware (the easy bit) - but sometimes at the cost of a high rate of false positives. And not all of them check for bad behaviour to try to catch the most dangerous threat from shiny new types of malware which hasn't yet made it to the 'known' threats database.

If you're really serious about your AV then look at the test results (both sets) and see how well your product performs overall. Read the notes in the reports, not just the tabled percentages which can be deceptive. I'll certainly be keeping an eye on it and use it to decide what to get next, after my current Kaspersky licence expires.

Note: If your AV software wasn't tested, ask yourself why they didn't want it to appear in the results tables.

I've been a supporter of Norton for a couple of years now - all the stories about high overheads, etc seem to have been resolved. I've been running it for a couple of years on a heavily-used PC without problems.

And it's not expensive, if you shop around. I got NIS 2010 off Amazon for £15-ish delivered - hardly over the top!

Hello, I have read through the advice on this thread and hope you can advise me. My anti-virus choices are limited to something that is free and that also doesn't hog resources on my rather old Dell PC, operating XP Service Pack 3. I have used Avira free version for a while and been very happy, however having updated to version 10, I have seen so many bad reviews and suggestions that it's AV detection just isn't working. I have tried other options in the past like Windows Security Essentials, Avast and AVG, yet each of them (especially AVG) hogged my PC resources something awful at the time.

Can anyone recommend a free-AV that is as light as Avira on RAM etc but is also reliable? I do realize that I may have to trade one advantage against the other. Any advice appreciated. :)

If I buy a new Kaspersky internet security 2009 3 user, uninstall the one I've already got, and use the free upgrade that Martinsdoll mentioned, would that work ok and give me my licence for the next 12 months, or are there any hitches I need to be aware of?
The 2009 3 user version is currently on ebay for about £11, so that would be a good saving if it worked.

    Hi elsien,

I bought the 2009 3 user version in early february this year as aliEnRIK :A advised from this post, and was able to upgrade free of charge so I don't see any reason why you should not be able to do so.

There were no hitches at all for me, and it sounds like a good deal you've found on ebay!

I'd wait until the more techie minded folk read my post as I wouldn't want you to purchase it, and weren't able to upgrade as I've done.

This is my post advising folk of my find, maybe follow these steps and see if it work on your current version.

    Hope this helps...

Thanks - I think it was your March post that gave me the idea after I did a search. At this rate I'm going to be paying you and aliEnRIK commission!

Common sense, don't go to websites or follow emails that send you to a website that are too good to be true, if you are ever in doubt don't. I hear it all too often " it did sound too good to be true".
