One is hardware, the other software.

The only good enough reason to have a software firewall is when you need outbound traffic filtering.
For a home user, Hardware (router) NAT enabled firewall protects all inbound traffic. As long as your antivirus is uptodate, there is no point in filtering outbound traffic, in my opinion using a software firewall is simply an overhead.
  • A different take on this subject: the best security plan is to buy a computer from a manufacturer that furnishes their techs one of the best tools known to man: remote access. That way when you have a problem you won't ever have to take your computer to a repair center...something you want to avoid at all costs. Because we now know that in our generation their is a new thief that operates just like a crooked auto mechanic and that would be an unethical computer repair person who overcharges a customer 200 bucks for a $100 dollar job (a friend of mine got ripped off at an Apple store when he took his machine in for repair). And then there's the matter of privacy: I've been computer literate since '03 and my computer has never left the house and never will. And that's good cause I'll never ever hand my hard drive over to a stranger, no way dude, that'd be nutso cause my data is top-secret for my eyes only and it's gonna be that way right on up till the day I die!!

If your data is top secret, then allowing remote access is the last thing you should be doing:eek:

i hate kaspersky 2010. it slows down my system so much. when it is updating i pretty much have to wait until it finishes. i often get not responding appearing when i try to do things whether it be on the net or with software on the pc.

windows defender is running but it has always been running at the same time as whatever security software i have had has been running. the windows firewall is turned off so no conflict there. its only been giving me grief since i changed over from the 2009 version last october. i remember someone advised me to download the newer version from their website as on the disc it is an older version. it made next to no difference. full scans are ran by kaspersky, windows defender and malwarebytes regularly but they never find anything. when i installed the newer version of kaspersky i just installed it over the older version. could that have been a bad thing to do?

Windows defender is absolutely useless IMO. Mines switched off completely (Id remove it if I could).
Possibly you shouldnt have installed over the top
Possibly theres leftovers of others security that are affecting it
Perhaps you have other programs that are affecting it

I'm not sure wether this info is posted on the Techie board, but if it isn't I hope it will be useful info for some members and possibly save folk some money... :)

I purchased the Kaspersky 2009 3 user edition at £14.99 as advised by
aliEnRIK from this post and have been extremely pleased with it.

I was checking some info recently and found that you can upgrade to the 2010 version for free by clicking 'Support' (Bottom left of your Kaspersky security) which takes you to the link to download it.

I've just checked Amazon and they are currently selling the 2010 version for £33.90 here

Prices are correct at the time of posting.

    Many thanks again Rik :A
