Since switching to Linux I have no security.

Back in the XP days I had whatever Gizmo recommended on his TechSupportAlert site.
It's a site full of free computery stuff, I'm sure it's been mentioned here.
  • A very interesting thread this.

I am currently considering changing from using Avast & Zone Alarm Free versions to just using Kaspersky interenet security which is AV & firewall. Does anyone have any opinions?

I'm sure the protection is sufficient with both - I just want to choose the option that has the least effect on system performance (eg boot time, memory usage etc). I would hope Kaspersky would be better since it's one program?

I use AVG Free edition (which is becoming hard to find nowadays) on my second PC and on my main one I use Avast! antivirus.

I have also used Norton system works (slows down the PC), Webroot Spysweeper and Spyware doctor (yearly subscription required.)

If you get a serious virus or spyware problem you can download Microsoft Onecare from the Microsoft website (Genuine Windows licence required)

The software I find most useful is Webroot Window Washer which deletes all those unwanted fules that your PC accumulates when on line.

Reg Supreme Pro is also good (now known as Power Tools).

Beware of websites offering you a free registry or spyware scan. You still have to pay for the full version to fix any errors.
    Regards,

    • Spybot S&D
    • Superantispyware
    • Malwarebytes
    • CCleaner
    • Firefox ad ons: Noscript and ABP

Is there anything else I should be using?

    My setup:

    Router firewall
    Linux

It makes me laugh how much time and hassle it took when I maintained all the security software on Windows, and even then viruses managed to get through. It's much better to use a secure operating system, rather than patch a leaky one!
  • I use Ubuntu - secure, fast, free, in fact its so easy my 70 year old mom uses it

Coupled with Google mail which removes viruses and spam
