One big protection is being behind a router, like the ones provided by ISPs O2, Be, etc.

Macafee is not that great (balloons and eats memory), even though we have it on unlimited licence we still install free antivirus software. Avira is good, downside is a popup everytime you start the PC (but only when you start the PC, so not that bad). AVG has become a control freak and thrusts too many features down your throat. Antispyware is overkill, it will just slow the system down. Better to be a more careful web browser and not visit dodgy sites.

    My setup:
    Router with firewall.
    Linux. LOL

I use Avast home edition (free), never have any problems i dont understand why anyone pays for an antivirus when theres so many free ones that are just as good, although from experience i would say a little pc know how and common sense helps when dealing with the internet :D

On my laptop AVIRA is popping up a lot and sometimes fills the screen especially when I am in the middle of doing some banking. I am about to uninstall it. Also, every day there is a little box at the top right of the screen telling me about an upgrade.
