Why no to advanced sytem care? I just installed it on my mates computer (and replaced AVG with Avira). It does seem to be running a lot better.

The main part of it is to clean the registry. If it cleans something it shouldnt then you can seriously mess up the computer (Really down to the computer and whats on it)

I've taken to using Revo Uninstaller more than ccleaner as it targets app specific registry entries and so less likely to mess things up. Depends if you're removing and uninstalling or doing a general system clean up I suppose but for me it's most likely the former.

I actually shy away from revo more these days as it messed up someones computer after they removed something with it (Forgets what the program was)

I've not had any problems with it so far (touch wood). But I have certainly had one or two occasions when ccleaner has screwed up the registry.

I bought a 3 year license which reduces it down to about £20/year.

Do you get the upgrades to the newer versions with that?

Only problem there is your tied in for 3 years, it may come bottom in av testing in the 2nd or 3rd year or have problems like in 2007.

Having said that eset is pretty good overall.

Yes. While you have a valid license you're entitled to the latest version, no matter what version you started with.

Quite possibly (although I'm in start of my 2nd year of the 3 year licence anyway). Same risk with everything you lock yourself into, but so far they've only improved. Anyway I'm not actually locked in because there's nothing to stop me using avast etc or going with another AV. Maybe not the most economical thing to do but I won't shoot myself in the foot by sticking with ineffective security software, just because I'd already paid for it.
