"But, again, the Feb AV-Comparatives report panned it (OneCare: same engine) for not doing well at detecting threats from the past year. Current, real threats in other words. Its May report (part 2 of the Feb report) said that it did very well for emerging threats, and it has done well for false positives.
PC Mag didn't show it being very effective either"

The product's overall performance on the malware removal test was average, not outstanding. It detected 89 percent of the malware samples and scored 7.0 of 10 possible points for removal. On a parallel test using commercial keyloggers, its scores were decidedly low: 30 percent detection and 1.8 points for removal. But that low detection rate indicates that Microsoft isn't really trying to remove most commercial keyloggers.
Although Microsoft touts the product's live kernel behavior monitoring and other features specific to rootkit removal, in practice the software detected only 67 percent of rootkit-type threats and scored just 4.9 points for removal, well below average. Hitman Pro detected 100 percent and scored 7.1 points.
Earlier this year Microsoft warned that scareware (rogue security software) is a growing problem, but apparently the Microsoft Security Essentials team didn't get that memo. The product only detected half of my scareware samples and scored 4.5 points.":idea:0 -
pcguard from virgin 4me.... never had a prob with it and its free.. offers everything ;-)0

I've always used AVG in conjunction with ZoneAlarm as:
a) They're both free.
b) I've never had any problems with them slowing my PC down like Norton does.
Hope this helps...0 -
Freegan ~ no disrespect but im after the main sites who throw viruses etc at them in exacting tests to compare against the other av programs. Just because comodo stopped some nasties on your computer doesnt make me want to rush about downloading it.
About a year or so ago one of the many computer mags that I buy did a comparison of free firewalls and COMODO came second to Online Armor which I tried and found to be quite "User Unfriendly" so I stuck with COMODO and they seem to have gone from strength to strength.
The only annoyance I'm currently experiencing with it is the monotonous regularity of automatic updates to the antivirus database (sometimes as many as 12 a day).
But I can't really blame them for responding so quickly to emerging threats, can I?0 -

Suppose that depends on the actual number of threats theyre updating
For example ~ they might average 1 each time. But if another av averaged 200 a day..........
(Either way id be customising that update time methinks)

I use AVG Internet Security and Windows Firewall.0

Avira has stopped updating on my Windows 7 install I can update the definitions manually it fails when it tries to do it automatically.
I am going to put Avast back on or might give Comodo a try.0 -

If you can't fix the Avira problem (your probs using an older version of it, Avira 8? You should be on 9)
But if you can't fix it then re-install Windows 7  You're putting your self at risk using a less powerful AV like Avast or Comodo.0 -
AVG Internet Security comes with a two way firewall, why are you only using Windows Firewall which only blocks inbound?
AVGS firewall has more holes in it then a pincushion
So in that respect its probably better to run both (windows for general security and avg for outbound)
Of course it would be far better to dump AVG entirely and pay for something far FAR better like Kaspersky:idea:0
