    COMODO

They do all the security software you need for free.

Firewall, Antivirus, Email filtering, Memory Firewall and System Cleaner to name the few I remember.

Regular free updates to the virus database and the software (when needed).

They make their money from the commercial versions they produce but their philosophy is that if there are fewer infected domestic PCs around then the safer their commercial customers' PCs are.

I've been using virtually their entire freeware suite of products for a couple of years now and I've only been seriously infected once and that was down to me being inattentive.
COMODO saved my bacon, rooting it out, quarantining it and sending it back to COMODO Labs for analysis.

Whenever I double check my system with any other reputable security product I come up squeaky clean.

Now, can anybody tell me how to get rid of Avira's intermittent ad exhorting me to upgrade to their paid-for version even after I've uninstalled all Avira software and cleaned the registry?

I had to upgrade Avira on OH's computer recently, and the guard won't activate (the 'umbrella' icon is constantly closed). There are ways around it, but since Comodo has combined it's Firewall and AntiVirus into one program (Comodo Internet Security), I'm thinking of ditching Avira..
Also, Comodo needs updating/upgrading on his machine, which I think is going to require a new install (I somehow managed to update/upgrade Comodo Firewall on mine - found the Firewall somewhere..., but it's got a red circle with a line through it on the taskbar icon, even though the program itself says everything's up and running.. so.. might have to do the same with mine: I'm rather fond of Avast though.. )

Although I don't use OH's computer that much, Avira's been a bit of a pain from time-to-time, with it's annoying lengthy updates which won't minimise. Having said that, it seems to do the job, and has a very good reputation.

Although CIS allows you to deselect the componenet you don't want (Firewall/Antivirus/toolbar), it might just be easier to have one program...

    Any opinions?
(I'm sure at least one person's gonna mention Avira's excellent virus database. If so, I hope they also say something about Comodo's - e.g. it's almost as good, it's not that good, why,. etc..)

    :)

I can testify to its effectiveness. (See my earlier post.)

I'm not sure how it manages it but it seems to be able to 'enslave' other security software because I sometimes get messages claiming that COMODO has stopped a piece of malware infecting my machine but in message windows displaying the colour schemes of other antivirus scanners I have in reserve.

Freegan ~ no disrespect but im after the main sites who throw viruses etc at them in exacting tests to compare against the other av programs. Just because comodo stopped some nasties on your computer doesnt make me want to rush about downloading it.
