Ps everyone should check if telnet is enabled, if it is disable it, you dont need it for most home uses, and it is one security hole that can easily be fixed, also change the computers administrator name, and give it a password. (xp pro) with home it can be done too but its not as easy.
But if the router's password has been changed from the default should it matter if telnet is enabled on the LAN? after all, you can just go to http://192.168.1.1 anyway
I believe for both XP Pro and home to change the hidden administrator account it's start > run > type 'control userpasswords2' > reset password on administrator.0 -
thanks adouglasmhor, my brain and fingers have had a fight lol, i have dyslexic typing fingers :P they have been suitable admonished. :P
@jaffa, i only gave an example of telnet, i wanted something safe to demonstrate, I used telnet because most software firewalls wouldnt by default allow it, but an open router will if your on the lan. I didnt want to give anyone information that could be used in a real attack. i just wanted to demonstrate the router wouldnt block something that is potentially dangerous, if you can login as admin, then you have full control. telnet for that purpose i think is an example, maybe i could have explained it better, but i hope you see the point i am trying my best to make.
BUT because i still want to protect people, i came up with a sensible alternative, thats better than the router, smoothwall.org *a software firewall that runs on relatively old equipment with 2 networks cards. This will give you a decent internet firewall and will NOT affect your pc performance.0 -
