To long a thread to be of any good...

Security is fast paced and ever changing world.

I use a Sourcefire IDS/IDP coupled with Trend antivirus. I have 2 Citrix netscalers protecting my Webservers and just in case anything is missed all my borderware and watchguard firewalls are being 'watched' by a very impressive American device called a Trigeo SIM. Kaspersky is looking after my server and also Nessus is running to make sure that I'm patched and WSUS is also in the mix to cover the patch management of the desktops of my environment....

A recent pen-test....... caught me with my pants down.......

pcguard for me... had no probs yet... that i know about anyway..lol
  • Nowadays I still use a firewall to tryand prevent hackers but for browsing, I just use Sandboxie.

It deletes EVERYTHING you just did on the net unless you specifically ask it not to. Nothing is written to the hard drive by default.

    This is NOT for beginners.

ive got rid/unistalled the free version of PC Tools anti-virus........because it kept 'suffering a fault' and switching off!

ive taken some advice from here, and am now using the free version of Avira on my computer!

(i'm still using zone alarms firewall..........that seems fine to me)

I've used Kaspersky Internet Security for a few years now, and been very pleased.

The best free option I've come across (for detection) is AntiVir.
  • Yes that happened to me too with Norton and also McAfee. We use AVG now (free version ) but it's annoying becasue it runs out after 30 days and you have to reapply. What should I use instead? Anyone know?

AVG free you get a new key every year by applying, are you sure you are not using a 30 day trial of AVG pro or something?

I also use WOT (Web of Trust) add on in firefox as it gives warnings of many sites having a bad reputation as you browse, red circle = be very careful!

they do a version for IE as well and as a bookmarklet for Opera, Google Chrome, Safari, and any other browser supporting Javscript and bookmarks/favorites http://www.mywot.com/

Really depends whether you want a freebie or are willing/want to pay.
If free, the consensus on here seems to be Avast or Avira Antivir.
I've tried both and think Avira is easier to use but Avast seems to do a first rate job without my having to do anything.
Also, Avira is proving problematic for some on here trying to download the updates but I wonder if that's just because they are still using Avira 8 and haven't updated to version 9 which is out.
Avast I don't like the interface, i do not find it at all intuitive but it seems to work well so????
Of the paid for ones I think the main consensus is between Esit's Nod 32 or Kaspersky but there are many others that are highly effective. You'd need to search back through recent threads, have a read and make your own mind up I'm afraid.:o
