    Even if that was true, a SOFTWARE firewall is still needed (or certainly recommended)
    :idea:

    Mmm, No good having just a router firewall if you've got your network wide open.

    I don't run a software firewall unless I'm connected using my mobile broadband dongle. In which case, I run Comodo. There is no need to run behind a software firewall unless you use a public network connection.

    Yes, really. Your computer's IP/MAC address can't be identified externally as your router is the only exposed identifier.

    Think of it like this. If you're paying your credit card bill via post. You send the envelope with payment to the company address, the post department will then give that envelope to a specific member of staff to process. You will NEVER know the identity of that person because that is all dealt with internally.

    It's still wise to use Windows firewall (or some sort of inbound firewall) to prevent people/bots on the network (whether it be a home or public network) from accessing your computer.
  • Apologies for what may appear a dopey post. I'm loathed to renew another years Norton subscription & would really like to know what, or what combination of, free software can do the job for me instead? I am a normal user with Vista. Thanks in advance.

    Norton what? Internet security or antivirus?

    Decent firewall -> COMODO internet security
    Antivirus -> AVG Free
  • Both, I think..............I bought them as a package. Thanks for the quick reply BTW. Are these two free & are they good enough. Oh, and is that ALL I need?
