    I turn off the auto update so I can look at whats being installed, I've had problems in the past with an auto update thats messed things up. I have it so it tells me theres updates avaliable.

    Me too, but it sounded like the OP just turned it off completely (Maybe?)

    Has there ever been a case of windows update being used to attack a computer via a sneaky virus? ..........Just curious (surely its not impossible)??

    Ive sometimes wondered that. If it is possible (And id guess it is), that would be a seriously nasty thing to do!

  • Haven't seen anyone mention ESET yet? A lot of these so called 'top brands' have viruses targeted specifically to them because they know they can effect so many users. ESET (security suite) has everything built in... minus the kitchen sink (they don't like to make you PC slow). Worth a try!

    I've user Norton, McAfee and some others. They are 'OK', but I'm totally hooked on ESET these days.

    I now run xp inside a virtual machine using virtual pc (free) when xp machine is created I make another copy, takes about 2 minutes, then use as per normal, if I get a virus I just delete xp I am using and make new copy (another minute) worry free internet use.
