Yep ~ im pretty sure Mcafee is slowing you down

The question is what do you want in its place?

To buy id recommend Kaspersky ~
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kaspersky-Internet-Security-User-License/dp/B002BWPWQC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1256632312&sr=8-2

For free you have 3 choices ~ AVG, AVIRA and AVAST (Personally I use Avira, If you use AVG make sure you download version 8.5 ~ NOT 9). AVG is bloated and id personally not recommend it. AVAST is a sort of inbetween and AVIRA is very light but very good at what it does (But DOESNT have email scanning)

When youve decided then use the MCAFEE REMOVAL TOOL
    http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

Then install your chosen av program

Also TICK this in hijack and click to FIX it ~
    O9 - Extra button: Sky - {08E730A4-FB02-45BD-A900-01E4AD8016F6} - http://www.sky.com (file missing)

Once your chosen AV is in place then give your computer a clean ~
    Download CCLEANER
    http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds/downloading-slim
Run the CLEANER scan (UNTICK 'cookies')
Then run the REGISTRY scan (Backup the registry when it asks)

  • Great thanks. I've just done the 'fix' and now I'm perusing my new options. I only use internet for browsing and don't use outlook (use hotmail). I'm currently too scared to use internet banking at home but would like the option to at least do internet shopping with a credit card. Would Avira give me the right amount of protection or 'do you get what you pay for'?

Id recommend using FIREFOX with the NOSCRIPT plugin in place of internet explorer (Regardless of which av program you choose)
    http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722

Its not so much getting what you pay for as it is being smart and using the right software for the job
AVIRA will protect you from the nastiest ones
I also use KEYSCRAMBLER for firefox
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3383

I would also recommend monthly scans with MALWAREBYTES
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

Best advise is just 'be wise'
    Dont click links willy nilly
Scan suspicious emails before opening the attachments
Dont download what you dont understand
Dont click links via msn or suchlike
Dont get caught by 'bogus' phishing sites/emails

  • Thanks so much for all your help, you've been a star! :A

    Hi :)
I don't recall seeing this information before, but then it doesn't apply to me (personally) so I may have just overlooked it.
I recommended Avast to my Dad, but he's come back and told me he can't get the free version since he's not a home user. I don't think he uses his laptop for business as such, apart from ebay selling, but he only uses it at his business address.

Can anyone recommend a good free anti-virus program he can use as a 'non-home' user?
(He has 'security' from 'xln', but having talked him through cleaning up his very slow laptop, on the phone, I suggested he try another anti-virus: laptop seemed to speed up when we turned xln anti-virus off. He uses Vista which seems to provide defender, anti-malware and firewall, but not anti-virus..? (wondered if he had two running, but don't think so..). I can research myself of course, but some suggestions would be good to get me started :D

    Thanks

P.S: Reviews on xln are pants, so suggested he ditch it. I think he's going to when his contract is up.

I personally dont know of any free decent anti virus programs that can be used for a business
In fact even the pay ones will probably cost a lot more if theyre to be used for business too

I used to use NOD32 but very rarely use Windows now so I just have Comodo IS on my Windows box.
I now use the best AV around - Linux
It said on the box requires Windows 7 or better, so I bought a MAC

Using free Avast 5 plus Malwarebytes Anti-Malware now (both good) after serious issues with Lavasoft, the latest version is so clunky, wonder if anyone else is having problems?
never put off buying a bargain today,it may be gone tomorrow
