Bought a new laptop about 4 weeks ago and the "free" trial of McAfee is about to end. I'm being offered a renewal for £40 for a year. Is this worth it? What are my alternatives? I have used Avira on the Desktop, but had horrendous problems with viruses lately, so not sure whether to go for that or to spend some money on something else?

    Any advice or pointers please?

Don't spend money on something that isn't very good. If you want to buy an anti virus program then Kaspersky or NOD 32 are the best choices, however the free packages from Avast, Avira & Microsoft Security Essentials are still good choices. If you're having horrendous problems with viruses at the moment then you might want to change your browsing habits to avoid them.

Why not turn your desktop into a dual boot with ubuntu, kubuntu, or mint linux and let the bad browser users use that and FF on user only. They will see what rubbish they are downloading then.

If you want windows you just need to select it from a menu at start up, otherwise it defaults into Linux. Lot less chance of anything nasty attacking linux (except the flash sound problem GRRRRR! and even that takes minutes to fix).

  • Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 is pretty good - and available cheaply on ebay, but it has a few quirks.

ESET Smart Security 4 is a fantastic product, highly recommended!
  • BEWARE if renewing your Kaspersky .... received pop ups every time i logged on warning me that my kaspersky security was expiring in 14 days, 13 days, 12 days etc. finally renewed with 12 days to go and it appears that I have LOST those 12 days as my new contract expires 1 yr from renewal date and does not take account of the fact that I have renewed 12 days before my current contract expires. I have tried to contact Kaspersky to rectify this and have been passed from department to department with noone taking responsibility. Very poor customer service and fraudulent if you ask me.

Oh, and as a decent freebie, MS Security Essentials is available against malware protection (with automatic updates too).

  • Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 wins hands down. More thorough virus searches than Norton or Mcafee!
