  • I have all the usual removal tools on my PC but have not found ANY virus, spyware etc in nearly 2 years thanks to just THREE programs,

    Zone Alarm Firewall
    Nod 32 Antivirus
and in my opinion the BEST security program, free OR paid....

    Sandboxie
(just Google it for the website)

All your surfing is done within a secure environment on your PC and nothing can get out unless you want it too (downloaded files).
The best part of it is.... it's FREE.

  • For my Windows partition? Just Avira Free. For Linux? Don't need one.

    In my opinion

Best free antivirus is AVG - I use this on all home installs of Windows XP Vista etc.

In addition it is advisable to use a firewall - the regular windows firewall is OK, but a better (free) option is Zone Alarm. It basically asks you (then remembers) when programs and services want to connect to and from your machine. Once configured it is great and very secure.

For those who want to spend a few pounds I can recommend ESET's antivirus. According to their blurb they have never missed a virus "in the wild". It is exceptionally good and has a very low resource use. I use it on my web server.

Avg is not as good as Avira or Avast and slows the system down considerably, going after nortons title. MSE is a better solution too.

Zonealarm free is a very bad firewall:

both at different times avira and avg. I don't know yet if it gives as good cover but as I only use windows about once a week it worth the risk for me.

Would anyone know if this is any good?

Microsoft Security Essentials is doing very well in tests, even up against the big boys you have to pay for. Check on av-comparatives org

I can't post links, but was reading the Oct 2009 removal tests pdf. Just lists it as 'Microsoft'. Gives it Advanced+

I used to use Avast on all my kit but then moved over to a paid NOD32 sub. That runs out soon and I'll probably move to MSE. I already install in on the backhand jobs I do at work ;) and seems pretty solid.
