Firefox has been annoying me a bit lately. Keep having trouble adding new bookmarks. Sorted it; now it's 'ignoring' me again.

Anywho, thought it was about time I got a second/alternative browser (got ie, but only use it if I have to) for when Firefox is 'in a mood' hehe. Nasty ads appearing on pages I'm not used to seeing them on led me to search for ad blockers and such like, and I stumbled upon this link about NoScript. Only read a bit, but makes me think I'll check it out some more when I feel like it..

To be truthful, I have never had any pop up ads when I have been on the web. So I take it that my security should be ok.

Since I did the check with Malwarebytes and Hijack etc I haven't had a problem, in fact it seems to be quicker logging on and quicker changing pages.

NoScript is a bit involved and needs a bit of configuring to make it useful. There's no point in having it if you just let everything through...

    I'd suggest this - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

It's what I use and is very effective in not showing ads / banners etc.

Firefox is a pretty decent browser, have you got the latest version? You can check by going to Help -> Check for Updates. If so then I'd suggest running CCleaner to clear temp internet files etc.

I use Avira and Comodo at the moment. Used to use AVG and Zonealarm, but I had some problems. Just found a new tool from Sophos that I posted in another thread - looks really decent.

I didn't explain myself very well. FF has been my 'primary browser' for a few years now: got latest version (3.0.10), love it.
    I also use/love ABP :T
The ads were as a result of getting another browser. I've got Opera again and like it, though haven't got around to putting ABP or similar on it yet, if you can.. (think I saw that you can somewhere..) Hence yucky ads. which I'm not used to seeing. Opera's only my 'backup browser' anyway.

Still not sure about NoScript. I agree that there's no point having it (or other security programs) if you just let everything through ;) Not sure it's necessary with the other stuff I have though, but I'll keep it for a while. Maybe try and configure it more to my liking or something..

Had CCleaner a good while now too: run that, EasyCleaner, and other things regularly :)

Router firewall plus Comodo (Free edition)
Antivirus is the latest AVG plus antispyware Ad-Aware and ccleaner to clear up junk and clean the registry from time to time.

Other than the router it has not cost a penny :D

I can fully recommend Avast. Twice now I have had viruses that have been caught before reaching the "Move to Quarantine" stage. Avast! Webshield technology scans the HTTP-stream en route to your computer usually with no delay at all. When a virus is detected, your only option is "Abort Connection", and nothing gets downloaded from the malicious site. Excellent piece of software

It really is getting quite boring when people repeat the fallacy that Norton (sic) is a resource hog. It may have been true a while ago, but I can confirm (as can all professional reviewers that I have found online) that the 2009 version uses minimal resources (currently less than 5k) and tiny CPU. It's right up there with Kaspersky in detection, too.

I moved off Norton a while ago for those very reasons, but tried it again when it came pre-loaded on a new PC. I've found it excellent, and never notice it's there. They redesigned it to be minimally intrusive, and it's worked. I've just bought a copy for my wife's laptop - £15 for a year's subscription.

Ive seen test results that do confirm what you say about detection rates. But, people still seem to have a hell of a lot of problems with it judging from various forums (Including this one) I go on

And how can you compare something that came pre loaded onto a NEW pc when it might well run a hell of a lot quicker if you took it off and put say AVIRA on in its place?
