Ive seen test results that do confirm what you say about detection rates. But, people still seem to have a hell of a lot of problems with it judging from various forums (Including this one) I go on

And how can you compare something that came pre loaded onto a NEW pc when it might well run a hell of a lot quicker if you took it off and put say AVIRA on in its place?
I uninstalled the previous version, and added the latest version as a clean install over 9 months ago. The only time I've seen or noticed Norton Internet Security since then is when it's found something suspicious for me to look at. When the PC has been running slowly, it has never been Norton hogging the resources - that's how I know ;)

OTOH, my wife's brand new PC came with the 2006 version pre-installed last year, and that does have a noticeable effect on performance, as well as the occasional freeze when manually updating. She took out the subscription because that's what it said she needed to do. :wall:

So I'm just saying that 2009 works fine for me, while earlier versions definitely were more trouble.

Cant argue with that. At least they are TRYING to better their product. But it still seems to fail where it matters most ~ the actual detection (going off forums as opposed to tests)
My guess is its very good at catching known viruses, but its 'heuristics' is very poor for catching potential nasties (Terrible with malware too)

  • I have just bought a HP Touchsmart 820

It gave me 60 days free Norton security.

What I wanted to know is what should I download (free please) for the best security?

I wanted the advice becasue I believe if you put the wrong things together it can slow down the PC.

    I'm a complete novice.
    Many thanks for any replies.

Apologies - the 67 pages scared me a little - but I have looked back over a few pages and my question has been answered.xx

    Just wanted to know:

    I have downloaded

    ALVIRA
    MALWAREBYTES
    SUPERANTISPYWARE
    SPYBOT
    CR*PCLEANER

    Already have Firefox.

Does this mean I should get rid of the 60 day free Norton, leave it until the 60 days are up or reinstall after 60 days.

    Thanks for any help.xx.

Well you need to turn on windows firewall or use a 3rd party one (I personally use PCTOOLS FIREWALL)
Make sure you use spybots IMMUNISE feature too

To be safe online id recommend using firefox with the NOSCRIPT plugin
