Well you need to turn on windows firewall or use a 3rd party one (I personally use PCTOOLS FIREWALL)
Make sure you use spybots IMMUNISE feature too
To be safe online id recommend using firefox with the NOSCRIPT plugin
So, I have downloaded
ALVIRA
MALWAREBYTES
SUPERANTISPYWARE
SPYBOT
CR*PCLEANER
AND THEN i NEED TO MAKE SURE i HAVE spybot (caps, sorry) immunise, I get rid of NORTON and find Windows Firewall that is on the PC already or do I have to download that too?
Sorry for asking so many questions, I am a complete novice.0 -
windows firewall is built into windows (Goto CONTROL PANEL and SECURITY and WINDOWS FIREWALL)
Turn on windows firewall BEFORE removing norton:idea:0 -

I use Avira Antivirus
ZoneAlarm Firewall
ThreatFire
and.. Ad-Aware.
I also use the ABP and NoScript plugins for FireFox.
I'd say my security's pretty tight, even if it's all free.0 -
I use Norton 360 for anti-virus, firewall and it also offers an online back-up service.
I've used this for the last 3 years and haven't had any problems, it always blocks and finds any threats.
I would strongly recommend purchasing this, found cheap on Amazon.0 -
If you're behind a router, you don't need a software firewall as you have a hardware firewall built into the router - aside from which the windows firewall is pretty ineffective(on XP anyway, can't speak for Vista).
As a PC technician, I spend half my life removing Norton and McAfee and making people realise how much faster their machines can run without a bloated antivirus.
I'm an ESET reseller, but also very keen on avira, because Avast has occasionally let me down.0 -
I have McAfee on my latptop and a few months ago it got infected by a virus and I lost the last 10 months of data as I hadn't backed up. Needless to say, I will not be renewing my licence with McAfee next month.
Would it be sufficient to have AVG or Norton?0 -
Hello all - I'm looking for a bit of advice please. I have tried reading through this thread, but to be honest I'm getting a bit confused.
Avira anti-virus sounds good (especially as its free), but I don't know what to do about a firewall. I note that some of you have said that people who have a router don't need a firewall, but don't know if I have one - I have broadband cable from Virgin (it was Telewest blueyonder when I got it).
I've always had McAfee anti-virus and firewall (Anti-Virus Plus) and not had any problems, until last year when I got McAfee Internet Security Suite because it was cheaper; my machine has got very slow, particularly when starting up and when Mcafee is updating.
My colleague highly recommends Panda Global, but he had a major problem earlier this year and had to rebuild his machine when running a different older version of Panda - he thinks the latest version is spot on......
I don't use facebook, download music, play games games or watch tv, or anything like that - just internet (buying stuff and getting money off coupons!) and using e-mail, basic stuff really. My computer is quite old (2003) and is on Windows XP.
Sorry for the long post, but I hope all this info helps.
As my McAfee has already run out I'm going to try downloading the one month free Panda Global tonight to tide me over, but wondered what you guys thought - buy Panda Internet Security Suite or Global, or buy Avira Premium/Premium Security suite, or get Avia free and get a firewall from someone else (who?), or just get Avira 'cos I don't need a firewall? Help!
As you can guess, I'm not good at making decisions...........
TIA!0 -
Changed a bit:
Bitdefender AV
Open DNSthis thing =D
Routers firewall
Katie, Windows XP (Service Pack 2 and onwards) Has an inbound firewall so no-one will be getting in and 'hacking' you with messenger spam =]
The only thing is that if Avira does miss something (I see the free version does not include their 'advanced' antispyware, whatever that is...) but if spyware or virus or malware gets onto your computer and starts pumping out information about you or your pc then the windows firewall nor router will stop it because there only focusing on inbound network traffic.
The reason you see people (including myself) say you dont really need a software firewall is because antivirus makes the need for an outbound firewall redundant, well the 'logic' behind it is nothing should be on the computer pumping info out because the antivirus should stop anything nasty from even getting on the computer.
Besides, another factor I have to look into is being winged at by the other 4 members of my family because there firewall keeps poping up, also it complicates networking things like printers.0 -
Hi just wanted to ask, my McAfee virus software free trail runs out tomorrow and I'm planning on installing avast (as suggested before for my desktop pc from here) just wondered what the best way is to remove McAfee from my vista laptop (I currently have revo uninstaller installed on my machine if this would work?)
Thanks0
