    It's a firewall - just click allow

If you are going to do that, you may as well remove it!

What do you mean remove it? You mean don't allow access?

I would really appreciate some advice from posters who know far more than I do.
I have two Pc's and wired through the same router and a notebook connected wireless. I use Firefox for web surfing and I run the same security on all of them which is:

    PC Tools Firewall
AVG Anti Virus (Update and scan daily)
Spyware Blaster (Updated a couple of time a week)
    Windows Defender (Daily scan)
Superantispyware (Run a couple of times a week)
A Squared Anti Malware (Run a couple of times a week)
Malwarebytes (Run a couple of times a week)

This seems quite a lot! Is it too much? or could it be improved?

You don't really need the firewall as your router and windows xp sp2/3 has one

AVG is poor, Avira is a better free AV however if you want to spend £11 for a 3 user licence of Bitdefender for a year (at staples) then I'd do that, then you can get rid of all the other free programs as Bitdefender covers viruses, malware, spyware and adware.

Exactly, you don't need outbound protection with a good Antivirus.

    Hi,

Just got my new laptop which is running vista and McAfee and I having a few problems with one of my firefox addons (downthemall ) which keeps giving me a file access error. Just wondered if anyone could advise if this is something which McAfee could be blocking, and where I could turn this off in McAfee

    Cheers

    Hi Badguts

Thanks so much for the information. I am not happy at all with bt changing the security as I had no problems before with Norton. It worked behind the scenes and did not affect my working at all. Now I have just plugged my laptop in the electric because battery down and there is a message saying I am not fully secure, and to do something about it! I have not got a clue what to do. Apparantly NetProtect Plus from McAfee should also work in the background but obviously not. I wouldn't mind if I had installed it myself but the lady from India did it for me remotely.

I have emailed bt and waiting for a response.

I don't think Spywareblaster is rubbish. Major Geeks think it's 'Geek-o-licious' too, so that'll do for me ;) It shouldn't be too much hassle to update your security programs once a week

When you start using a new firewall, it needs to 'learn': so for a while, it will keep pestering you with inconvenient questions, which you need to answer in order for it to learn. It's doing it's job. If you don't know what answer to give it, look it up. The net should provide you with information on just about anything. If you're not sure, block it till you are sure. espresso said above that you may as well remove it if you're going to just (blindly) click allow. I took this to mean that what's the bloomin' point installing a firewall if you can't be bothered to 'train' it properly! You wouldn't fit a new lock on your door then leave the door open would you?

I've had a quick look around for info. about Kontiki, and I'm undecided, though it has made me a little concerned about using BBCi player! SystemLookup came up with a few scary looking entries, but not exactly like the file you posted. This link is about the most informative I've come up with so far. I went to the Kontiki site and it showed as red on WoT.. haven't checked further, but worth being careful..

Hope my waffle helps someone a little. Just be cautious. There's no point saving yourself 10 minutes by thoughtlessly clicking something that you could have made a more informed decision about, which could result in hours of hassle and frustration for you.

    :)

That, the training part is for outbound traffic. The fitting the lock to the door thing is inbound. Anything outbound should be safe because it's only coming from programs on your computer. If something malicious is sending information out then theres a bigger problem of why didn't the antivirus pick up on this, what else is there on the computer that it didn't pick up.

Yeah it's another line of defense but most of the time malicious programs masks themselves under genuine names and fool the firewall so you might not even get a pop up.
