Avira seems to have better detection rates than Avast, imho Avira looks better/ more professional too.

Anyone any opinions on whether it is better/worse than Avast which is also usually recommended on other threads?

Avira definitely has better detection rates

Yeah thanks Rik. That was my feeling too about StopZilla.

Both are good. I've got Avast on mine, and Avira on OH's. I prefer Avast, since Avira (used to?) update slowly - took ages: think it's quicker now, but seems to update annoyingly often..?

It's been discussed in this thread: in fact, there's a couple of posts about it further up:

Can anyone give my any pros and con on both the AV.

Avira has the better defintion files but does nt scan emails which avast does (But you can put the attachments on your desktop and scan them from there anyways)

EDIT: I'm too slow. Rik's already repeated the above between me starting this post and posting it - I did go and dismantle a small remote control robot in a futile attempt to fix it in the middle of typing though lol

By browsing a web page, you could infect your computer with
spy ware, ad ware, dialers and hijackers. These, unwelcome
guests, are some of the fastest growing threats on the
Internet today. It is important to protect your computer
and one of the most powerful software products, available
for this, is Spy ware Blaster, a program created by Java
    cool.
    How are you affected?
A spyware program will record every keystroke and e-mail as
well as every web page you visit and every chat session.
Some spyware programs will try to take control of your
homepage, search page and other browser settings. Some may
silently download themselves onto your computer. Others may
pose as legitimate programs and persuade you to download
    them.
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: Spyware blaster sucks you have to manually update.

A good setup is with a hardware firewall (e.g. built in to your wireless router), software firewall and anti-virus.

I think Norton is a bit greedy on the CPU. Since we're talking free, I always use:
    Firewall: ZoneAlarm free edition
    Antivirus: AVG free edition

I have had Norton for a few years now with bt, but i got an email saying they are finishing with them and i need to download NetProtect by McAfee. The Offshore advisor remotely arranged this for me as i didn't know my password.

I have been using it now for a couple of days, just switched my laptop on and got a box saying the following:-

    Program Wants Internet Access
A program on your computer wants to accept incoming connections from the Internet. Before it can, you must decide whether to allow it access. To protect your computer, you should only allow programs that you trust.
    About this Progam
    Program: Delivery Manager Service
    Location: C:/Program Files/Kontiki/Service.exe
    Recommendation: Unknown program
    Tell McAfee about this program
What would you like to do?
Allow access, allow access once or block access ( in the box)

I haven't a clue what this means, does anybody else?
