Thanks for that. I think my laptop has all your suggestions except the noscript and firefox bit. Should I have that too then?

The MacAfee is on my desktop as I have had it for a while free. So with that I still need the malware/spyware bit too?

Mcafee is generally awful at detecting nasties (especially malware and spyware)
Yes ~ id definitely suggest using all the programs I suggested
Including NOSCRIPT as mcafee doesnt have definition files for most of the online viruses (drive by scripts we call them)

In fact, id personally suggest removing Mcafee. But hey, its your computer

Why is McAfee so bad esp if its free?

Also is NoScript just if running firefox?

With my latest laptop I followed Rik's suggestions of Avira etc.

Can he or someone else post the links to it all please as I cant find them.

The reason I would like them is that I may replace some bits on my children's laptops. They currently have AVG.

I don't know how old your children are but I have a separate login for my little ones and have the Glubble add-on installed, so they only use the net through that. You do need to register, but it's free, and you can then add family members/access levels (Mummy, Daddy, Child A, Child B, etc..). It's got links to lots of child-friendly sites (CBeebies, NetNanny, etc..) which you can activate/allow/deny as well as being able to look up others through parent access and add them if you like. I still have firewall and AV running, but I don't have to worry too much about them coming across an inappropriate site ;)

hannoja ~ what kind of age range would you say GLUBBLE is? Sounds fairly young to me (Upto 6 say?)

According to Glubble, it's for kids under 12:
Glubble lets children under 12 safely surf the Internet by giving parents the tools to supervise their viewing. Just like you choose appropriate books and TV shows for your children, on Glubble parents can pre-approve all Web sites…and add new ones at any time.
My older boy is coming up to 7 and I'm intending to use Glubble 'on him' for as long as I can get away with it. I can always add sites for them if they want me to/I approve, but I won't be ready to let him loose on youtube, etc.. for a while yet . Maybe when they're in their twenties! :rotfl::rolleyes:

I guess it's down to the parent/child/relationship and how concerned/controlling/paranoid/open/trusting/etc.. you are.. :D
  • I recently bought a laptop with a free trial of McAfee. That is due to expire soon and I was planning to use Avira or Avast but I'm not sure which order to do things in. Do I uninstall McAfee first and do I need anything special to do that? Then do I download the new antivirus software?

    I'm using Vista.

Crispy Ambulance (great name :p) ~
Download Avira (or Avast) to your desktop ready

    Disconnect from the net

    Use the MCAFEE REMOVAL TOOL
    http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

    reboot and install Avira/Avast

    Reconnect to the net :)

  • Thanks Rik. :D

Dumb question - presumably I download the McAfee removal tool as well before I disconnect and then follow the uninstall directions?
