I assume none maybe a firewall, and AV but you shouldn't need that.
  • Has anyone bought Avira Pro? If so, are there many worthwhile differences?

Use built in Firewall on router

    Norton Anti virus

    Zonealarm

    Virus free for 4 years!!

Although I am scrupulous about what I download or install

As an extra security option, I always use the Microsoft vitual keyboard when entering account numbers and passwords. Could stop keylogging, and if you have a cordless keyboard, ensure it is secured.

I would use avira over avast but I dont like the nagware.

If you Google "avira popup", you'll see it's pretty easy to stop it.

Turn OS X's firewall on by going to System Preferences > Security > Firewall

As for antivirus, the threat to Mac users is tiny compared to Windows users, so if you stay away from dodgy websites, don't download pirated software, etc, you'll probably be fine. I installed an antivirus app on my Mac a few weeks ago for the first time in 3 years, and it found absolutely nothing.

If you want to install one, iAntivirus is free and very light on system resources, so it won't slow your Mac down at all. It doesn't scan for Windows viruses though, so be aware that while they can't hurt your Mac, you can still pass one onto your Windows using friends, for instance, via a forwarded email.

Its the principle, they offer a free version then nag you to buy the pro version, its annoying since I dont pay for the software I use. Simple as it might be I'd rather use avast which IMO treats its users with more respect.

Don't you have to register with Avast and give them your email address in order to use their free version?

    Swings and roundabouts really.

Yeah but thats done once and I never give a real email address to anything like that anymore, when I first starting using it and did use my email address the only email i got from them was the registration code never received any spam.

Avira spams you everyday as standard.

My Norton Internet Security is now due for renewal but I am reluctant to use this any longer as a few people have told me it slows your computer down alot. This I can believe, I have been looking on this forum but am totally confused now by all that is on offer.

A few people have recommended Kaspersky and I have found Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 for £18.79 for a 3 desktop 1 year subscription. We have 3 laptops in the house would this be OK or is it specifcally for desktops? Any advice would be appreciated.
