Skippy ~ Kaspersky would be fine (And what I would recommend if your willing to pay for your security)
Use the Norton removal tool to completely remove it before installing Kaspersky

Turn OS X's firewall on by going to System Preferences > Security > Firewall
As for antivirus, the threat to Mac users is tiny compared to Windows users, so if you stay away from dodgy websites, don't download pirated software, etc, you'll probably be fine. I installed an antivirus app on my Mac a few weeks ago for the first time in 3 years, and it found absolutely nothing.
If you want to install one, iAntivirus is free and very light on system resources, so it won't slow your Mac down at all. It doesn't scan for Windows viruses though, so be aware that while they can't hurt your Mac, you can still pass one onto your Windows using friends, for instance, via a forwarded email.
Thanks will take a look0 -

I had McAfee (the one that comes free with Sky) which has now expired. I installed McAfee Virus Scan Plus (free with HSBC). Couple of questions:
Are they the same product?
Will the new one just over-ride the old one?
Do I need anything else?
On our laptops we have used the other suggestions on this thread and Martin's article ie Avira, AVG etc but though might as well use the McAfee freebie too.0 -
Don't user more than one anti virus at a time. That's my sugestion. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

debjay ~ as adoug' says, NEVER use more than one anti virus at a time (they conflict, slow the computer down and possibly make it less secure than using just the one)
Personally I wouldnt touch Mcafee with a barge pole. Id go with Avira (AVG is cr*p too)
Also have at LEAST Malwarebytes and/or Superantispyware as secondary scanners:idea:0 -

Sorry should have clarified that. Do only have one or the other anti-virus on the laptops in my house, not sure why I have chosen different but tried following what is recommended on here at the time I needed to install protection.
I am trying to click on thanks but it keeps taking me to the top of the page and cant thank. Sorry will try again later0 -
With my latest laptop I followed Rik's suggestions of Avira etc.
Can he or someone else post the links to it all please as I cant find them.
The reason I would like them is that I may replace some bits on my children's laptops. They currently have AVG.0 -
UNINSTALL AVG then use the 32 bit AVG removal tool (Normal uninstall always leaves bits behind)
http://www.avg.com/download-tools
Download AVIRA ANTI VIRUS PERSONAL (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_antivir/
Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD NOW')
http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
Download SUPERANTISPYWARE (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/
Download SPYBOT (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION' ~ make sure TEA TIMER is UNTICKED on installation)
http://www.filehippo.com/download_spybot_search_destroy/
UPDATE and IMMUNISE (Make sure it reads ZERO unprotected)
I also always suggest using FIREFOX with the NOSCRIPT plugin (Especially when kids are browsing willy nilly) ~
Download FIREFOX
http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/
NOSCRIPT
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
NOSCRIPT works by blocking ALL website scripts (Which is how dodgy websites infect your computer ~ the easiest way to catch a virus after downloading). So you need to UNLOCK all websites you use for them to work properly (Like this one for example)
It also prevents 'page hijacking' (clicking to goto a BANK page for example and being redirected to a BOGUS page which would give scammers your login details!)
I personally set it so that it DOESNT show messages about blocked scripts. Then all you need to do is use common sense. Think to yourself 'does the site work ok'? If so it doesnt need touching. But if you wanted to watch a video on youtube say, youd need to unlock parts of it. Look bottom right, If theres ANY red on the 'S' symbol, then something is being blocked.
(You will also need the other addons like FLASH etc)

Thanks for that. I think my laptop has all your suggestions except the noscript and firefox bit. Should I have that too then?
The MacAfee is on my desktop as I have had it for a while free. So with that I still need the malware/spyware bit too?0
