Hows NOD32 for people? I've herd it's both really good and some people have said it's really bad.

This evening I just carried out a scan on my system for spyware, adware, viruses, etc. Installed Vista in April 08.

I had 38 cookies that were worth deleting, otherwise a totally clean system! Pretty impressive :)

I use Avira Antivir Premium (cost £10 I think) and otherwise rely on the router firewall (Netgear DG834G) and use Firefox for browsing. Very impressed with Avira since purchasing, very unintrusive and very low memory useage, yet as soon as a threat appears up it pops!
    matched betting: £879.63

http://lunarsoft.net is a place you can go to download the anti-malware toolkit. This was featured in a recent Webuser magazine. Its all free and updated.
  • I have a paid version of McAfee, but was recently advised to ditch it and I now run the free versions of Avira (constantly running), ThreatFire (again I think this constantly runs in the background), malware (scan every few weeks) and Superantispyware (scan every couple of weeks).

Do you think I should think about adding anything else (paid or free)?

    Thanks

  • 1. It depends if you can afford to purchase a LEGAL licence. Whatever you do or don't run - purchasing a TOP Anti-Virus is a MUST - if you want your computer to serve you faithfully.

    2. Sharewear is generally a dead loss as ultimately you have to uninstall it after the trial period - (windows generates enough cr*p as it is without adding to it with bad or incomplete uninstallations! ) unless you buy it subsequently.

    3. Freeware can be brilliant - PROVIDED you research the individual softwares in professional forums first before installing. Some "new boys on the block" start off as free offerings whilst they establish themselves in a market.

    4. Pirated software is now a fools paradise. We all want "summat for nowt" but the new generation of worms, trojans, rootkits and other seeders and planters are devious and CLEVER beyond your imagination. Bit silly to download an anti-virus that has a worm hidden in it ! You have been warned !!!!!

    5. When pondering what software to inflict on your poor faithful PC - spend some time "Google'ing" the INDEPENDANT Security Testing Houses for their test results of common brands. It can be HUGELY enlightening when compared with the online sales blurb of the household brand names. Try to be alert to those online "Comparison" sites that are clearly sponsored by the very products they allege to be testing. Be alert to the convincing blog evangelists - each with their own reasons to have you believe they are the next Messiah. Avail yourself of a broad spectrum of informed opinion and make up your own mind.

    6. Never ..... but NEVER EVER  fall for that out of the blue 'pop-up' that tells you your PC is running below par or that you are infected by Aunty Loretta's Old Knickers virus (click here and we'll put it right for you lovey!) - and if you ARE unlucky enough to suddenly find such a friendly invitation smiling at you .... Do NOT say yes .... Do NOT say no .... do NOT x-close that pop-up window (All are programmed invitations to tears and pain) but try via Ctrl & Alt + Del to close it down. More advice than that would become a new thread.

    7. Nod32 has a fairly low footprint but has been getting heavier in recent incarnations. It is about to be overtaken by a couple of 'Newbies' who are far lighter on resource usage. In terms of effectiveness - I cannot fault it on some 100 PC's.

    Here endeth my humble contribution.
