So what happens if you go on a webpage with a script with a virus in?
What happens if your sent an email with a virus in?

I'm on a Mac which helps! There are less than 200 viruses in the wild that affect Mac OSX, all of which require administrative approval and entry of the root user password to run them. (Compared to around 2000 windows viruses in the wild at the moment)

I use NoScript for Firefox which prevents scripts running without me checking them first

Well clearly, but dont you think it would be prudent to let us know that initially so I dont have to go asking?

As Mac becomes more popular, then so does the number of viruses and malicious code written for it. Bear that in mind as Microsoft is continually losing market share to its fruity rival.

OK, so I am wondering if anyone can help me pick the best free anti virus for me. I had been using the freebie trial versions of Norton (- now run out and taken off via the removal tool) but now I am left with no virus protection and no money to pay to buy Norton 2009.

I have in the past tried many free versions but they all either confused me with their messages or threw so many adverts at me to buy the full version that I just took the damn thing off!
Thing is I cannot recall which irritated me in what way! (I hate adverts, I hate hagving to redownload ALL my software again -eg Napster, Itunes, Open Office all had to be redownloaded after being made corrupt after downloading free virus protection in the past) I have to bite the bullet and download a free version. So if any one can tell me the pitfalls of the free versions I would be really grateful!

AVAST is the most inobtrusive for adverts. But I find it a little confusing to work if im honest.
AVG is the next in line, but I never recommend it as its thrown up ALL sorts of problems this last year
AVIRA throws up an advert everytime it updates, but its by far the easiest to use and uses the least resources

Id suggest AVIRA personally (Wont kill you to press one RED X surely?)
Make sure windows firewall is turned on (OR download PCTOOLS FIREWALL)

Sounds to me like you downloaded DODGY software in the past!

Call me stupid if you like, but i use windows firewall and windows defender, and some 3rd party addons in firefox.

I've found that everytime I install antivirus software and firewalls, my computer slows down.

I use Adaware 2008 from time to time to hunt out any malware i end up with.

I've only had one virus on my pc since i started using them, and that was when i was 12 and a little naive about security.

Nowadays I find that using common sense tends to keep my pc fit and healthy. If I was to recommend a Antivirus product however, it would be Kaspersky Internet Security (Anti virus, Adware remover, Firewall). Its not free but its the best ive ever come across, and the brief month i had it on my system it didnt slow it down. It also doesnt bring up false positives which many of the free antivirus programs do (AVG being one of the big ones that comes to mind)

False positive: when a anti-virus program flags something as a virus when it is not.

200? Where did you get that number?

As far as I know, there are a tiny handful of trojans for OS X (such as the recent one hiding in a pirated copy of iLife 09), all of which have to be downloaded and installed by the user, and that's it. There weren't even 200 viruses written for Mac OS 9, let alone 200 in the wild for OS X.
