Why do you continue to post in a thread about security when you clearly know very little about the subject! Other less knowledgeable peeps may actually believe the crap that you post, if others like RIK don't take the trouble to post.
What a nice post to start the New Year !!. At least I took the trouble to try and help and said I'd made a mistake. If you think it's crap don't read it and please don't bother to reply if you have to be a sh*t about it!

OK. My mistake, I thought the firewall was part of Windows Defender. But all Windows with XP Service Pack 2 and later, have a built in firewall, which can be turned on or off. See here:-

Looks highly familiar to me

My mistake ! Windows Defender is the inbuilt anti-virus, but you should disable the Windows Firewall (in the Control Panel) if downlaoding an alternative firewall, as they sometimes work against each other and slow down your computer.

The idea is that you spout so much crap about something you know so little about you are dangerous to others and we are trying to protect them from you. It doesn't matter whether he reads it or not. He does not want anyone believing you and making a mistake. No one cares about you feeling hurt and aggrieved though.

OK. It may be c**P in your eyes, but is there any need to be so rude and aggressive to someone who is only trying to help ?? That goes for you as well, I cannot believe that one little post, quickly spotted as erroneous, should be given such horrible treatment. Lets call an end to this and I will refrain from posting in future!!!

Lucky you didn't tell them their house prices are falling like a stone, their jobs are under threat and the pound in their pocket is worth 20% less than it was last summer. Someone might have died!

  • I have just installed openSuse on an oldish laptop, anyone got any hints as to a firewall suitable for using with this distro?
For Linux I was going to suggest using iptables. This will probably be available from YAST. I believe it can be a pain to set up though. The following sites might help.

    http://beginlinux.wordpress.com/2008/06/16/build-a-simple-iptables-firewall/
    http://www.howtoforge.com/setting-up-an-iptables-firewall-with-firehol-on-ubuntu

It seems however, that OpenSuse does have its own application called SuseFirewall2. From a quick scan of the documentation this seems to be a wrapper application for iptables.

    http://en.opensuse.org/SuSEfirewall2
    http://forums.opensuse.org/archives/sls-archives/archives-suse-linux/archives-network-security/archives-security/366215-susefirewall2-iptables-can-i-select.html

To be honest, I haven't used either as I am happy with the protection from my router. Hope this helps...
