Lara, don't fret. Is this proposals for workshops that you organise or ones you wand to attend? In both cases, these are very competitive (ESRC don't have much money for seminar series). If it is about attending and presenting a paper, it may be easier at first to go to big, established conferences - workshops are targetted, they can be by invitation only and in all cases to present at a workshop you need to already have reputation in the research field (this takes time and patience; it is one matter whether you research is poo or not; the others recognising it is an entirely different one).

Focus on finishing the PhD and on getting out some papers (this is what will get you a job). Also it may be an idea that your supervisor and other senior colleagues have a look at your abstract and give you feedback; it is all about learning.

Definitely something in the water - DH handed in his notice last week and they have put him on gardening leave

Not quite sure what he will do without money but hopefully his wages this month can stretch to 2 months (debts will have to have token payments)

He has an interview today for a very similar job but with a different group of people so thank you Universe for providing :T

DH is looking into constructive dismissal as he has been basically bullied at work but I think we should move on from it and concentrate on a new job plus he might want to work in a similar line of work again and that would make things difficult as the company he has left is one of the biggest.

On a seperate note I am waiting with baited breath for the outcome of MG's letter :j.

Thanks everyone again for keeping this thread going - it is such a comfort to know I can post here with like minded people.

Good luck to your DH EE! There are people here who can help you decide on the constructive dismissal claim and how to go through the process. Your DH needs to decide whether the stress would be worth it - in some cases people feel it isn't, in others they feel a need to see justice done. If he is in a new job quickly, he may want to focus his energy on that. I hope he manages to enjoy his gardening leave and relax and recover from some of the stress he has been under.

    Message from Yolanda:

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!! The letter was hand-delivered to the very handsome Mr. U. He put the envelope between pages in a book he had in his hands. He thanked me for delivering it and promised me that he would write me to give me an update.
Yours truly, Super Secret Squirrel (aka Yolanda) NOW LADIES GET SOME SLEEP!!!

The letter is there - now we need to be patient and see what the response will be.

The Universe lined up to help me solve this 20 year old issue so very smoothly - so for all that helped I am truly grateful.

Now to take car of some of the other "want to clear ups"

Yay to the letter arriving!! :j

Happy Easter FW! Thanks for the advice. It seems now that the workshop was very oversubscribed - 90 abstracts submitted for 12 places. Perhaps I should attend anyway (as an audience member) as its rare to find events based exactly on my area. The email says future events may take place because they know there is such as demand. Maybe I should help with organising - am going to email the student organiser as he is a friend.

Psycho - can't believe it's legal to ask you those questions either! Good luck though, remember what Greenbee said about you interviewing them too.

EE - so sorry for your DH's stress at work. I *really* hope he gets this new job. It's good he can have time off for gardening leave - I hope he starts to feel better. I hope you are okay too and not worrying too much about him or about money.

Greenbee - house sounds ace - pics in a few months maybe? :)

It is a gorgeous day here and lots to do. Tomorrow is the seminar with the big cheese lady from our niche branch of sociology. She is scary, but only because she is so good. Hopefully she will help us with all our PhD woes. I am happy to have organised something again.

  • Morning Matrix.

Just had breakfast and cup of tea and walked Dotty. Have a massive list of stuff I want to get done this week. Not sure really where to start!

It is Choir practice tonight, so I am going to make sure I make the main meal at lunchtime and eat that, so that when Hubby comes home tonight all he has to do is heat it up and eat. I am so nice to him! :D

Hope everyone has a great day today - and MG, I am on the edge of my seat re the letter! :D

I think Spring and change is definitely in the air. Jobs, moving etc.

For me, it's definitely come down to re-evaluating friendships, been thinking a lot about why I'm friends with people, why they are friends with me and what positives and negatives there are about the friendship.

EE how long is he on Gardening Leave for? They have to pay him during that period and as long as his notice period is more than two weeks he will still be 'employed' for at least part of next month
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

I am wondering if there is a uniform Psycho, and that is why they want your dress size? As for the pic, a bit naughty I think, but some companies do ask for it, and there is a clause in the equalities and discrimination act about when you can request certain things, I don't know if off hand, but sure someone on here in HR might know?

good luck today and let us know how you got on.

Good morning ladies...I am feeling rather chirpy today - it must be the weather:rotfl:

The Universe works in mysterious ways - I went to see my employment advisor this morning she suggested that I see the DEA but I said that I did not want to see that woman (how can I see someone that I made a formal complaint about after she conned me the last time I saw her?). Still, I was pointed in the direction of 3 jobs which I am grateful for because when I had looked at one of them it said that I needed to contact the job centre, my advisor printed off the details and now my CV has gone in as the closing date is today. It would be a great job to get.

I am about to apply for the other two - although I need to do a bit of research on one of them before I apply.

Psycho - I can understand asking for dress sizes if you are applying to be a flight attendant but not for anything else, they can have that information after you have got the job. I hate the provide a photo thing too - what can a photo tell them?
